1989 Dan Beard District Annual Report

September 1988 to September 1989

The Dan Beard District had a highly successful year in 1989.

Some of the highlights of our year are as follows:

1. 24 of our 47 Units (25 Packs and 22 Troops) were Quality Units.

2. We collected $30,300.00 or 95% of our $32,000.00 Finance Goal.

3. We had a total population of 1505 Scouts, which represent our district as serving 22% of the total available youth. We also have approximately 300 adults serving in our district.

4. We trained 75% of the new Cubmasters and Scoutmasters in the district and had approximately 25 adults take the BLT course.

5. We were the top district in the Popcorn Sales for the third year in a row with 6690 containers sold and a Cub from our Pack 216 sold 355 containers of popcorn to become the top Popcorn Saleman in our Council.

6. We ran two of the largest Cub and Webelos Day Camps in our Council, which more than 100 Cubs and more than 150 Webelos attended.

7. Our 1989 Mall Expo had 24 Scouting units participating and more than 550 Scouts and Scouters in attendance.

8. We recruited more than 200 new Scouts during the year and we formed 2 new Packs and 3 new Troops.

9. We presented awards to many adults; 20 Distinguished Leadership Citations and 3 District Awards of Merit. Two of our Scouters were recognized with the Silver Beaver Award. More than 130 adults attended our ninth annual Dan Beard District Recognition Dinner.

10. Sixteen Boy Scouts in our district reached the rank of Eagle and 49 Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts received their Religious Award from their church.

11. Our Scouting for Food effort gathered more than 5 tons of food.

12. Our Spring District Camporee in April was attended by 18 of our 19 Scout Troops and more than 10 Packs visited the Camporee. 150 Webelos camped overnight and more than 260 Boy Scouts were at the Camporee. The staff consisted of 20 adult Scouters from our district.

13. We were unsuccessful in getting volunteers and donations for our district from the retired sector of the community. We are being actively supported by the Apex Kiwanis Club, who has made the support of Scouting in our district one of their goals.

14. We did not fill all of the key positions in our District Committee and we could not find enough Unit Commissioners to service all of our units. We dropped 4 units and fell 200 boys short of our recruiting goal.

The success of our District Program during 1989 was due in large part to our past District Chairman, Walter Brothers and our District Executive, Macky Garner and the hard work and endless hours of the District Committee, the Scouting units and the volunteers of our District. We owe the successful year to their efforts. I am certain that 1990 is going to be a better year for Scouting in our district.
