1994 Dan Beard District Annual Report

October 1993 to October 1994

The Dan Beard District had a very successful year from October of 1993 to October of 1994.

The highlights of our district's activities are as follows:

1. This Fall (Sept '94) we had 1934 Scouts in our District. More than 400 youth attended our Spring and Fall Roundups. We have about 800 adult volunteer Scouters serving our Scouts. This year we added 3 Troops and 4 Exploring Posts to our district, giving us a total of 29 Packs, 2 Living for Life Groups, 30 Troops, 1 Varsity Unit and 7 Exploring Posts. We now have 69 Scouting units, a 10% increase in units from the number in 1993.

2. Our Finance goal of $43,000.00 was reached and exceeded. We collected 105% of our goal or almost $45,500.00.

3. Almost 65% of our 69 Scouting units were Quality Units in 1994.

4. The District Key 3 and 11 other Committee members attended our annual January planning retreat to establish the district's goals and plans for 1994.

5. The 1994 Mall Expo was the largest we have ever had with more than 850 Scouts and Scouters from 13 Packs and 10 Troops in attendance. An estimated 3,000 mall patrons visited or viewed the displays the Scouts had set up.

6. Cub Day Camp was held again at Fred Bond Park in Cary. More than 230 Cubs and Webelos attended and almost 100 volunteers put on the programs. We received 100% on the BSA National Camp Inspection for the third year in a row.

7. We trained more than 30 Dan Beard volunteers in the two Tri-District Scoutmastership Fundamentals training courses. We trained more than 50 Cub Scout volunteers in the Cub Scout Basic Leader Training courses. The 1994 Bear Claw JLT course was attended by 34 Scouts and adult leaders.

8. During 1993 more than 50 of our adult Scout leaders earned training awards of various types and so far in 1994 we have had about 30 earn awards. Several of our district's volunteers attended Philmont in 1994 for additional training and Scouting education.

9. In 1994 more than 400 Boy Scouts from 100% of our Scout Troops attended Summer Camps throughout the United States. 18 of our 30 Troops (136 Scouts) went to Camp Durant. We had Scouts attend Philmont, JLT and High Adventure camps during 1994.

10. The District's Fall uniform exchange netted over $360.00 for the Council. We still believe we can make this a big money maker for the council if we can find the uniforms.

11. For the sixth time out of seven years our district sold more popcorn than any of the other 10 districts. Our 30 participating units sold 13,000 containers of popcorn, earning more than $22,000.00 for their units and an equal amount for the council.

12. Our 1993 Recognition Event was attended by 150 Scouts and Scouters from 11 Packs and 19 Troops. We awarded 25 Distinguished Leadership Citations and 3 District Awards of Merit to outstanding adult volunteers in our district. We also recognized the 23 new Eagle Scouts from our district and the 46 Cubs and Boy Scouts who earned their Religious Award in 1993.

13. Our 1993 Scouting for Food drive netted 4.5 tons (9,000 pounds) of food for the needy. We again gathered more food than any of the districts in our council.

14. Our Spring Camporee was attended by almost 800 Scouts and Scouters. More than 200 Webelos, Cubs and families visited and many camped overnight. The theme, based on Cub and Scout awards and merit badges, was put on by the participating units and was a large success. About 30 district camporee staff members organized the event.
