1998 Dan Beard District Annual Report

October 1997 to October 1998

Our District had a great year from October of 1997 to October of 1998. We were again a Quality District in 1997.

Highlights of the year were:

1. As of August, 1998 we had 2098 Scouts in our District. That is an increase of 7 Scouts from last year. More than 400 youth joined Scouting at our 1997/98 Roundups. We have almost 760 adult volunteer Scouters serving our district. This year we have added 2 Packs, 1 Troop, 1 Team and 2 Venturing Units. We now have 35 Packs, 34 Troops, 3 Varsity Teams and 4 Venturing Units in our district, for a total of 76 Scouting units.

2. Almost 65% of our Units (22 Packs, 26 Troops & 1 Post) were Quality Units.

3. Our Finance goal of $145,000.00 was reached and exceeded. We had pledges for 105% of our goal, almost $153,000.00.

4. The District Key 3 and 13 Committee members attended our annual January planning retreat to lay out the district's plans and goals for 1998/1999.

5. The 1998 Mall Expo was attended by 275 Scouts and 125 adult Scouters of our district from 5 Packs, 11 Troops and 1 Explorer Post. More than 170 Tiger Cubs, Cubs and Webelos participated in Mall Expo Pinewood Derby.

6. Cub Day Camp was held again at Lake Wheeler Park. More than 250 Cubs and Webelos attended and between 75-100 Scouts and adults served on the staff.

7. We trained more than 75 Dan Beard volunteers at the 1997/98 Tri-District Scoutmastership Fundamentals courses and close to 100 of our Cub volunteers at the Tri-District Cub Scout Basic Leader Training courses. Our 1998 Bear Claw JLT trained more than 40 Scouts and adult leaders. Several of our district volunteers attended Commissioner's College and some served on the faculty staff. In 1997/98 more than 73 of our district volunteers earned training and achievement awards of various types.

8. More than 400 of our Boy Scouts from 24 of our Troops attended Summer Camp.

9. The District's Fall uniform sale netted over $225.00 in profits.

10. For the 11th time out of 13 years our district sold more popcorn than any of our 11 districts. 39 of our units sold $159,270.00 worth of popcorn. The units earned more than $55,000.00 and the Council got an equal amount.

11. We awarded 33 Distinguished Leadership Citations and 4 District Awards of Merit to our district volunteers at the 17th annual 1997 Recognition Event. At the event we also recognized 44 Eagles from our district and 73 Cubs and Scouts who earned their Religious Award in 1997. Two of our district volunteers were recipients of the Silver Beaver Award.

12. 28 video tapes were signed out of our Training Tapes Libraries by 21 units.

13. Our Eagle Boards of Review approved 54 Eagle projects and 40 Eagle ranks.

14. Our 1998 Scouting for Food collected 6,740 pounds of food for the needy.

15. Our Spring Camporee was attended by 539 Scouts, 560 Cubs and many guests. Scouts from 20 Packs and 28 Troops participated in the games and camping. The camporee staff consisted of 15 Scouts and 58 adult Scouters. The Order of the Arrow "tapped out" more than 50 new OA members at the camporee.
