1990 RETREAT REPORT February 4, 1990 The Dan Beard District Committee retreated to Camp Reeves on January 19 and 20, 1990 where 11 committee members and 2 district members at large (our cooks for the weekend) met to schedule the district plans for 1990 and 1991. Attendees included: Ray Boling Membership Committee Gay Sharon Brothers Cook and Member at Large Walter Brothers Membership Chairman John Cheney Cub Training Chairman Macky Garner District Executive Larry Gracie OA Chapter Advisor John Kristoff District Commissioner Roger Lear District Chairman Ken Mizell Scout Roundtable Commissioner Betsy Powell Cook and Member at Large Julia Satrazemis Cub Scout Program Chairwoman Don Schmidt Civic Service & Activity Chairman K O Summerville Popcorn Colonel The committee met to critique the past year, discuss and plan what the District wants to do for 1990 and 1991 and to set the dates for the district activities that are to be included in the 1991 Occoneechee Council calendar. All of the objectives were met, we accompished a good deal of work and from what the evaluation reflected, I think everyone thought it was well worth it, especially since Gay Sharon and Betsy fed us like Kings. Thank you good cooks! Some of the comments indicated we need less detail Friday (that is my fault because I wanted to let everyone have their say and go into the detail they felt was necessary) and some thought our facilities are getting a bit shabby. The evaluation forms averaged 8.52 out of a possible 10, which was down a few percent from 1988 and 1989. That may be due to the fact that most of our officers are in their third or fourth year with the district and the retreat is getting to be a ho-hum event that does not promise anything new or exciting. Other than our financial goal, which is $4500 more than I bargained for, I think we can meet all of the goals we have set. They will not be met easily. However, if we think about and work on unit service, program, membership and finance all during the year, rather than fighting those fires only when they flare up, I think we can do even better this year. I am counting on all of you to help keep Scouting alive and fun. Scouting needs you. Please remember that without Scouters like you, Scouting very quickly would be a thing of the past. If you hear of unit problems please let John Kristoff know right away as he is our most direct contact with the units. Please don't let it slide until a Round Table or Committee Meeting. I think it is a lot easier to help heal a sick unit than to try and set up a brand new unit to replace a dropped unit. Like Walt said last year, I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to all who took time away from a busy family schedule and especially to Walt and Macky for their assistance with the planning and execution of the retreat. I don't think that I can fill Walt's shoes, as his leadership was second to none that I have ever seen in my 18 years of adult Scouting. But, I think we have a good handle on what we need to do and how we need to do it and that makes me more comfortable in trying to do the job right. Good luck in your job and thank you for being the good Scouter that you are. Your new District Chairman, Roger Lear
