Using Japanese Square Lashings, secure four (4) cross-bars to a large heavy log.  Using the crossbars as two man handles, safely lift and carry the log a marked distance and safely set it onto supports.  Untie the lashings after inspection. 631
Seaman’s Scuttle Butt After building a large, tall tripod (gyn) complete with ropes and blocks (pulleys) secure a 55gallon drum with a barrel hitch and raise the water filled drum (approximately 500 pounds) to a prescribed height and lower it safely. 200
Norwegian Waddle Build a large, tall A-trestle using spars and appropriate square and diagonal lashings.  Using either timber or clove hitches, attach long lines to the upper extensions of the spars.  With a scout standing on the A-trestle, tilt and waddle the trestle using the lines and move the scout a prescribed distance. 152
Polish Skis Four Scouts secure their feet to two 4”x6” timbers in a ski fashion as a team and walk in unison a prescribed distance.  The remainder of the patrol repeats the walk in the opposite direction.  Racing another patrol is permitted. 216
Spanish Windlass Using spars and HEAVY rope build a Spanish Windlass and move a 2,000 pound object a marked distance uphill.
Lumberjack’s Pulley

view 3
Using a long lifeline you would carry on a canoeing trek, attach the line to a broached canoe stuck in a hydraulic. Fabricate a Lumberjack’s Pulley attached to a tree and pull the waterlogged canoe which weighs over 500 pounds to a safe location. 210
Frontiersman’s Parbuckle With Long ropes attached to the base of a tree, make a turn around each end of a heavy log and roll (pull) the log uphill a prescribed distance.  The patrol should remain uphill of the log while moving it! 208
Voyageur’s Portage Using long ropes through pulleys attached high in trees, lift a canoe completely off the ground and transfer the canoe from one tree across an un-canoeable waterfall or class VIII rapids without letting the canoe touch the “current” to a safe downstream location at a second downstream tree on the other side of the river. 210
Remote Clove Hitch
view 2
Without entering a prohibited area, tie a clove hitch around the trunk of the tree in the center of the area. 316
Blind Square Knot With half the Patrol standing on each side of a high barrier which prevents them from seeing each other, tie a square knot on top of the barrier.  Untie the ropes and retie with a sheet bend.
Garbage man’s clothesline  Use the five (5) ropes to construct a tight line between two trees.  Use each of these knots or hitches: Square knot, sheet bend, two half hitches, clove hitch, taut-line hitch, sheepshank, bowline, overhand knot and figure-eight knot. 205
Hessian’s Halyard Hoist To a halyard rigged on a flagpole, attach two snaps an appropriate distance apart.  Attach and raise your flag.  The halyard may not be untied or cut.  The larkshead is the knot of choice.
Genius’ Bowline Without entering a prohibited area around a tree, tie a bowline tight around the trunk of the tree. 316
Bridge of Monkeys Get your patrol across a pre-existing rope bridge without anyone falling. 212
Red Snapper Fishing
view 2
Using short slender poles or staves joined by round lashings, make a long fishing pole with an attached line and ‘bait’ to reach out and catch the snapper. 226
Kenya Canister Firefighter After building and maintaining a small fire, use an existing line and pulley system to do the following. 209
1.      Fill an empty bucket with water from a barrel
2.      Lift the bucket
3.      move the bucket to the fire
4.      pour the water from the bucket to extinguish the fire
5.      Repeat as necessary until the fire is completely drowned.
*The fire must be fueled the entire time.
Napoleonic River Width Using any of the methods described in the scout handbook, determine the width of a stream across which a pioneering bridge is planned. 393
Bavarian Height Estimator Using any of the methods described in the scout handbook, determine the height of a tree that is to be felled for constructing a pioneer bridge.
Rube Goldberg Without using any knots, build a 3man  device to safely pick up and move three triggered bombs to a disposal site.
Closing activity/contest will involve building a device.  A working knowledge of lashings is required.  Each troop may enter one eight scout Patrol
