Attendees: Herb Council, Dusty Fletcher, Roger Lear, Susan Long, W.E. Medlin,
Pam Sen, Rodger Skirvin, Steve Stewart, Marvin Tharp, Ed Walsh and
Ed Williams (11)
1. Pledge and Invocation by Marv Tharp.
2. March minutes approved.
3. District Commissioner - Ron Werley (via e-mail): 85% of our units have
re-chartered on time. Units not in yet are Packs 102, 208, 238, 307, 392
and 397 (6 Packs), Troops 244, 307, 361 and 391 (4 Troops) and Crews 10 and
50 (2 Crews). Troop 323 told Steve Stewart they were dropping the unit.
Ron has signed up 1 new Unit Commissioner since last month.
4. Boy Scout Program - Ed Walsh:
Ed announced that he, Dusty Fletcher and Roger Lear are planning on
attending the May 11th Council Program Planning sessions at Wake Commons.
Advancement - Ed Williams: Ed reported that 16 Troops and 2 Crews had
advancement in March, an ammendment to last month's figures. March figures
are not available yet.
Eagle Board of Review - Ed Williams for Tom Allen: 8 Eagles and 7 projects
were approved in March.
Training - Susan Long: The 1st Outdoor Leadership Skills course was held
with the maximum number attending. The reports so far indicate it was a
good course. JLT has been moved to a new date, July 21-27 and John Roberts
is the new Scoutmaster of the course. TDC training will be held on June 8
in Fayetteville and Sept. 7 in Carrboro.
The May 4th course to teach New Leader Essentials, Cub Specific Leader,
Troop Committee and Chartered Org. Reps have 25 registered so far. Roger
Lear sent an e-mail note via YahooGroups with pointers to the course flyers
and the registration forms on the Council and District Web Pages.
Spring Camporee - Ron Werley (via e-mail): Jim McGraw is busy working on
the Camporee Program (as he did for the last 2 camporees) and at last
report he still does not have a unit/person to do the Sunday church service.
A lack of communication between the Council and the Ranger did not have the
camp reserved for the Camporee. Rodger Skirvin has straightened that up and
will send in the paper work for the reservation this week. We need to have
rope, GI bags for use as dummies, water and electric on in the Jamboree
fields and the grass mown in field's 3 and 4.
5. Cub Program - Linda Boggs (not present):
Advancement - Pam Sen: March reports show that we had 66 Tigers, 2 Bobcats,
39 Wolves, 32 Bears, 35 Webelos and 34 Arrows of Light for a total of 212
advancements in Cub Scouting.
Training - Roger Lear for Laura Wester: The course registration form and
information for the May 4th New Leader Essentials and Cub Specific Leader
training course is on the District Web Site and a YahooGroups e-mail was
sent out referencing the flyer.
Cub Day Camp - Linda Boggs (not present):
Cub Family Campout - No report.
6. Finance - Rodger Skirvin: The Major Gift Campaign has collected $18,200.
The Community Campaign is just getting started and has about $1000 so far.
With the outstanding results of the Family Campaign, FOS has collected
about $57,205 of our $77,000 goal.
Family Campaign Chairman Ed Walsh: With most of our units visited (only
about 6 units left to visit) the Family Campaign has collected $38,255 so
far for our FOS Campaign. The original target was $34,000. That means that
OUR UNITS HAVE DONATED ALMOST ONE-HALF of our $77,000 FOS goal. Ed stated
that it was a really outstanding response from the units to the FOS request.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Ed has the Packmaster and Troopmaster software for all
those units who have had FOS Family Campaign presentations. Contact Ed to
get your unit's copy of the software.
Popcorn Sale for 2002 - Dusty Fletcher: Dusty reported that the first
district Popcorn Kernel training will be held by the Council following the
May 11th Program Planning conference at Wake Commons.
7. Camping - John Slocumb (not present):
8. LDS Liaison - Herb Council: Herb reported that 100% of the LDS units in our
district re-chartered on time. We're sure Herb had a lot to do with those
results. Thanks, Herb.
9. Order of the Arrow - Tom Doligalski (via e-mail): The OA Brotherhood
Conversion in the Chapter was an outstanding success, with 28 Ordeal members
making the conversion. This was by far the largest contingent of any within
the Lodge. Furthermore, the Chapter had the largest membership of any
attending the Spring Pow Wow.
The Spring Brotherhood ceremonies were outstanding and the Chapter is
gearing up for the Spring Ordeal ceremonies. Arrowmen who are interested
should plan to attend our Spring Ordeal weekend.
The Chapter has developed its own web page and hopes to have it on line
soon. Other plans include a Chapter newsletter, as well as improvement to
our campsite.
10. Membership/Relationships - Marv Tharp: Flyer distribution is to be in
early May for the Spring Roundup. Rhonda sent out a YahooGroups e-mail
listing the schools to receive flyers. She would like to get parents of
children attending those schools to deliver the flyers. PLEASE HELP!
Marv needs help with contacting the 18 Chartered Partner prospects that
have been identified as possible unit sponsors. Marv really needs help
with this as he is really busy at work right now.
Total membership this month was 2964; 1733 Cubs, 1130 Boy Scouts and 101
Venturing members.
11. Activities and Civic Service - Dusty Fletcher:
Scouting for Food: We had more units report food collection and the final
total looks to be 13,628 pounds (versus the 13,089 reported last month).
Cub Leader Pow Wow Training: More than 260 Cub Leaders attended the
Council Pow Wow that Dusty was Chief of last week. The word is that it
was lots of fun and gave needed information to many Cub Leaders.
2002 Recognition Event: The annual Recognition Event will include the
recognition of Venture Crew members that have received their highest award.
12. High Adventure - Steve Stewart: Steve is helping with the Council's 2002
Family Cub-oree to be held at Carter Finley Stadium on October 4-6, 2002.
Look for more information soon on the Council Web Site.
13. Video Library - Roger Lear: Out of 11 training tapes at the Family Video
Store at the Swift Creek Shopping Mall, only 4 remain. It seems that some
of our Scouters do not follow the Scout Law (a Scout is Trustworthy)! We
have lost a total of 7 in the last 6 months and had lost 3 before that, so
we have replaced almost the entire library in the last year. Therefore we
are terminating the training tapes library at the video store. We want to
thank Brad Nelson, the store owner, for allowing us to try an idea that did
not work.
District Committee Members of the Month: Ed Walsh for his outstanding work in
the 2002 FOS Family Campaign.
Our next District Committee Meeting is scheduled for May l, 2002 at 7:30 pm
