Dan Beard District Committee Meeting Minutes
August 7, 2002

Attendees:  Martin Banning, Linda Boggs, Sheila Bullock, Herb Council,

1. Pledge by Gary Thorn

2. W.E. Medlin introduced our new (and second) District Executive, Martin
   Banning.  Martin is an NCSU graduate and an Eagle Scout from Ashville, N.C.
   Martin's e-mail address at the Scout Office is mbanning@bsamail.org

3. June minutes approved, with the notation that the number of Eagles reported
   for June (4) was really 3.  One had to come back this month to get Eagle.

4. District Commissioner - Ron Werley:  Ron has all the charters in for the
   units to pick up at the August RT.  If any units want the charter presented
   as a Sponsor's event, Ron will see that the UC takes care of it.

   ADC Roundtable Commissioner - Gary Thorn:  Gary will send an e-mail out on
   our e-mail list server reminding the units that the August 15 RT will be
   held at St. Andrew's this month.  This will be the Roundtable Kick-off
   dinner, which will start promptly at 6:30 pm. Our Web Site shows this now.

5. Boy Scout Program:

   Advancement - Ed Williams: Ed reported 7 Troops had advancement in June.
   Ed reported that the first 4 weeks of Summer Camp were full, week 5 was not.
   There were 60 Scouts, older than 13, that went thru Ed's new Cope Course.

   Eagle Board of Review - Ed Williams:  9 Scouts received their Eagle rank in
   July.  6 Eagle projects were reviewed and 3 were approved.

   Training - Susan Long:  A TDC Course (old TTT) will be held Sept. 7 at the
   New Hope Elementary School in Chapel Hill.  No one has signed up yet!
   On June 15th, 12 leaders showed up at the SM/ASM Leader Specific Boy Scout
   training held at St. Giles church.  About 5 were from Dan Beard District.
   Another SM/ASM Leader Specific course will be held Sept. 28, 2002 somewhere
   in the Sequoah District.  October 25-27, 2002 an Outdoor Leadership Skills
   course will be held at Camp Reeves, with Impeesa District hosting the class.

6. Cub Program - Linda Boggs:

   Cub Day Camp - Linda Boggs:  Cub Day Camp had 103 Cubs at week #1 and 98 on
   week #2.  The theme this year was Olympics and the Cubs enjoyed the program.
   Johnny Glover is checking to see if the Village of Yesteryear might be
   available for our Cub Day Camp in 2003.

   Training - Laura Wester:  On September 21, 2002 a New Leader Essentials and
   Cub Scout Leader Specific Training course will be held at Raleigh's Highland
   United Methodist Church, with Impeesa hosting the class.  October 4-6 the
   Council is holding a Council Cub Camporee at Carter Finley Stadium. On
   October 25-27, 2002 the Council Webelos Leader Training will take place at
   Camp Durant.  One of our Southern Districts is hosting the training.

   Cub Advancement - Pam Sen: No Report.

7. Finance - Rodger Skirvin:  The Major Gift Campaign has collected $33,050.
   The Community Campaign has raised $4321 and the Family Campaign, which hoped
   to raise $43,000 has reached $45,743. The FOS right now is over the $77,000
   goal and standing at $83,114 (or 108% of our goal).  Great work from all!
   The Council goal was $700,000 and they have pledges for over $800,000.  The
   support of BSA from the Wake Co. United Way disappears on July 1, 2003.

   Popcorn - Dusty Fletcher: We have 30 units out of 55 signed up to sell
   popcorn.  The District Unit Kernel Kick-off will be held on Sept. 3, 2002 at
   7pm at St. Francis United Methodist Church.  All Unit Kernels are to attend
   to be introduced to the new prize program and receive all of the unit
   handouts for the popcorn sale which starts September 21.

8. District LDS Liaison - Herb Council:  Herb said that the LDS units were
   putting more emphasis on their Cubbing units and as a result they will
   probably need more leader training in the Cub area.

9. Membership/Relationships - Rodger Skirvin for Marv Tharp:  Flyers will go
   out to the schools in mid-August.  Join Scouting Night will be Aug. 29th.
   Training for the Fall Roundup will be at the August 15 Roundtable.

   We have 1137 adults on our District Scouting roll.  We have 1215 Cubs,
   1089 Boy Scouts and 98 Venture Scouts for a total District enrollment of
   2402 Scouts.  We have 34 Packs, 35 Troops, 3 Teams and 14 Crews for a total
   of 86 units.

   We need to enroll at least 500+ Cubs by 12/31/02 if we are to be a Quality
   District.  That's not going to be easy - PLEASE HELP US GET MORE CUBS!

10. Activities and Civic Service - Dusty Fletcher:  A Scout Uniform sale flyer
    will go out in August for the Sept. 7th Uniform Sale.  If you can help us
    (we need you to help) with used Scouting clothing or equipment, contact
    Dick & Dusty Fletcher or Roger Lear.

    We will have a Scouting for Food drive on Feb. 1 and 8 of 2003.  Dusty said
    that the patches went over well as an incentive, so we will offer them
    again next year.

    The 2003 Recognition Event is coming up on November 21, 2002.  Nomination
    forms for the Award of Merit and the Distinguished Leadership Citation will
    be available at the August Roundtable.  Remember to nominate those in your
    unit that have served you for two years!

    The August 15 Roundtable will be held at St. Andrew's Catholic Church near
    Apex.  Our annual kick-off meal will be served promptly at 6:30pm.  Please
    join us and get caught up on everything that has happened since June.

    Roger Lear will give a Health & Safety class at around 7:30pm.  It will
    last about 1 1/2 - 2 hours.  If you attend the entire class you will be
    issued a Health & Safety card that is good for 2 years.

District Committee Members of the Month: Linda Boggs, Sheila Bullock, Jenny
Elwell, Steve Ennis and Laura Wester for their work at our Cub Day Camp.

The next District Committee meeting will be held on Sept. 4, 2002 at 7:30 pm
at the library of the Cary First United Methodist Church.
