Dan Beard District Committee Meeting Minutes
August 4, 1999

Attendees: Carl Bailey, Kathy Connelly, Dusty Fletcher, David Hearne, Roger Lear, Geri Mangum, W.E. Medlin, Steve Merritt, Larry Nessly, Bob Ratledge, Jeff Rock, Don Schmidt, John Slocumb, Steve Stewart, Judy Ward, Ron Werley and Ed Williams (17)

Guests: Jeff Rock and Carl Bailey

Pledge: Bob Ratledge and reading of poem "Just A Chance".

June minutes were approved as written (there was no meeting in July).

District Commissioner - David Hearne: P331, P/T 211 and P/T 228 have not rechartered yet. We have 15 Unit Commissioners and we should have about 28.

Boy Scout Program Reports - Don Schmidt:

Camping - W.E. Medlin: Cover letter and survey will be sent out soon.

Advancement - Ed Williams: No report.

Eagle Board - Ed Williams: In June 6 projects and 5 finals were approved. In July 8 projects (2 were revised) and 4 finals were approved. We have 4 projects and 3 finals scheduled for August.

Training - Don Schmidt for John Cortese: SMF is scheduled for October 1-3 with Hank Degruy as Scoutmaster. The TTT training is scheduled for September 18 at St. Luke's Church in Sanford, N.C. (FINALLY!).

Cub Program Reports - John Slocumb:

The going away party for Susan Long was well attended and we gave her a Scouting book signed by all and $50.00 for her to spend in California. Susan has taken a job as the Eagle Coordinator for the Council in her area in California; their gain and our loss. Good luck Susan and family!

Advancement - Judy Ward: Judy counted pink slips for a couple of hours (since the computer is still behind) and presented the following report: April - Bobcats 14, Wolves 19, Webelos 11 - 10 out of 36 units advanced. May - Bobcats 13, Wolves 4, Bears 8, Webelos 13, AOL 7 - 9 units advanced. June - No records; July - 1 Webelos (records are incomplete).

Training - Kathy Connelly: CSBLT will be Aug. 9 and 10 from 6:30 to 9:30 pm at the Raleigh United Pentecostal Church (where we hold Round Table). If you have Cub Den Leaders that need training you had best take advantage of this session as we are not sure when the tri-district sessions will be.

Cub Day Camp - Lisa White: Cub Day Camp week 2 was hotter than usual with 102 degrees. We had TV coverage by Channel 5 and the 86 Cubs attending made our total for the two Cub Day Camps at about 334. Only 1100 Cubs attended Cub Day Camp in the entire Council, so we had about 1/3 at our Cub Day Camp. Thanks to Lisa and the rest of those that ran the camps. If you know of any Scouts that need an Eagle project, there are plenty of them at the Optimist Club Farm. We are working with them to plan on having all of the tri-district's Cub Day Camps at their location. If you are interested in helping contact John Slocumb (661-2103) for information.

Order of the Arrow - Larry Nessly: Louis Hanneman cannot continue as a Co-Advisor and Larry has night classes on OA nights. Larry can help with planning but we are essentially without a Advisor. Anyone interested?

Health & Safety - Steve Merritt: Steve has a 9 minute video to show at the August Roundtable at the combined session. Unit leaders attending will receive a certification card and their names recorded at our Council.

Membership - Jeff Rock for Stan Belyeu: Join Scouting night will be held on August 26. Stan needs help at the schools and with the flyers. PLEASE HELP! We have a new Troop at Watts Chapel Baptist Church. We are down 6 units but our youth count is up 34 Scouts. We also need MORE NEW units.

Activities and Civic Service - Dusty Fletcher: Dusty wants each Committee person to bring a dessert for about 10 people to the August Roundtable. She needs help setting up starting at 5:30 pm on August 19th. Chicken, potatos, salad, drinks and utensils will be supplied by the district. Tell your unit that the supper will start at 6:30 pm (1 hr. earlier than RT).

Finance - Jeff Rock: Thanked everyone, especially Steve Merritt, for the great job our district did on the family campaign.

Old Business: We still need a RT ADC, a Cub Program Chairperson, an OA Advisor and lots of help. The Nominating Committee will look into those.

Council Camporee: November 5-7 at the Garner Highway Patrol Training Center. If you pre-register your unit it will cost $8 per Scout/Scouter. If you don't pre-register it will cost $10 per Scout/Scouter. The council has had to hire busses to haul Scouts and that has increased the fee.

New Business: Don Schmidt asked Jeff Rock to check and see if the new National BSA computer system has a program to track unit leader training records at both the district and the council level (and such things as the Health & Safety and Youth Protection video training that we provide).

New Business: Recognition Event in November so be thinking about getting in your nominations for DLC and District Award of Merit and Silver Beaver.

New Business: Jeff Rock reported that he will be introducing prospective DE's to John and David so that we can hope to have a new DE by September 1.

District Committee Members of the Month: Steve Merritt for his work on the family campaign.

Next District Committee Meeting: Wednesday, September 1, 1999 at the Cary First Methodist Church Library at 7:30 pm.
