1. Pledge and Invocation by John Slocumb.
2. January minutes approved.
3. District Commissioner - Ron Werley: Ron has asked his Commissioner Staff to
be at the February Roundtable to help all of our re-chartering units go over
the unit charter documents so they can be submitted to the Scout Office. We
have recruited Keith Leister as the Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner.
Roundtable ADC - Gary Thorn: February Roundtable will feature help with
unit re-chartering, a report on Scouting for Food, information on the 2002
Mall Expo and a meaningful program for Cub and Scout leaders.
4. Boy Scout Program - Ed Walsh: Ed reported that he had received the CD ROM
from another council which contains PDF files for all of the new training
manuals, along with viewing programs and the inter-active Troop Committee
game. We will copy the CD ROM and make it available in our training tapes
library and each training chairperson will have their own personal copy. He
and Susan Long reviewed the CD ROM to make sure it was complete.
Advancement - Ed Williams: Ed handed out a final report (using the best
figures the council can give him) for Boy Scout advancement for the year
2001. The report will be placed on our district web site.
Eagle Board of Review - Ed Williams for Tom Allen: 3 Eagles and 3 projects
were approved in January. The Board needs help with the February review as
there are 13 finals and 2 projects to be reviewed. If you can help on Feb.
13, e-mail Tom Allen, Warren Dunshee or Ed Williams.
Training - Susan Long: Susan is getting council approval for a training
course on May 4, 2002 for Troop Committees and Chartered Organization
Representatives. It will be held at Sony-Ericsson's 8001 Building at Davis
Drive and Development Drive at the Research Triangle Park. Registration
will be at 8 am, with COR training going until about noon and TC training
going until about 2 pm.
Susan is also holding a Tri-District training teams meeting at the Scout
Office on February 19. They are hoping to form at least 4 Tri-District
training teams to do training during the year.
Spring Camporee - Ron Werley: Ron is working on getting the camporee patch
ordered and completing the budget. The camporee web site is being used
effectively, although many units have not yet signed up.
5. Cub Program -
Advancement - Pam Sen: January reported 4 Tigers, 5 Bobcats, 9 Wolves,
28 Bears, 41 Webelos and 33 Arrows of Light for a total of 120 advancements.
Pinewood Derby - Jim Conrad: Jim could use more help for the Pinewood Derby
and he had gotten Greg Fishel as one of the announcers for the derby.
6. Finance - R. Skirvin: Rodger introduced Steve Glass, our 2002 FOS Chairman.
FOS Campaign - Steve Glass: Steve has lined up the Community Campaign to
start in March. He has recruited Dr. Fred Oliver to contact the medical
community in our area for help with our FOS goals.
Family Campaign Chairman Ed Walsh: With 16 units visited the Family
Campaign has collected about $17,000.00. There are about 14 more units
scheduled to be visited. If you can help Ed contact him via e-mail.
Popcorn - Rodger Skirvin for Dusty Fletcher: Dan Beard District was
recognized as the top selling district in our council at the annual council
Popcorn Recognition Dinner held at the North Raleigh Hilton. Our council
was the 4th largest seller in the Southern US and the 17th largest seller in
the US.
7. Camping - John Slocumb: John asks that all Boy Scout units fill out the
Camping Survey that is on the district web site and send it to him.
8. LDS Liaison - Herb Council: Herb has distributed the FOS information to the
LDS units. He has also lined up Unit Commissioners for most of the units.
9. Membership/Relationships - Marv Tharp: Marv has had meetings to do some
council and tri-district membership coordination in order to try and resolve
some of the issues that are facing us this year.
10. Activities and Civic Service - Dusty Fletcher: Dusty was not at our
meeting, due to illness, but submitted a report via e-mail.
Scouting for Food: Remember Scouting For Food collection this coming Sat.,
Feb. 9 from 11 am to 2 pm. The collection sites are in Cary, Garner and
Fuquay-Varina. The goal this year is to collect at least 8,317 pounds of
food, which would be 1,000 pounds more than we collected last year.
Scouts collecting 50 pounds of food or more will receive a Scouting For
Food patch. All of the information is available on our district web site.
Scouting Anniversary Week: We are in the middle of Scout Anniversary Week.
Scouts are encouraged to wear their uniforms to school on Friday, Feb. 8
to commemorate the 92nd Anniversary of the BSA. Scout Sunday services were
held last week at area churches and those for the United Methodist churches
will be held this Sunday, February 10.
Cub Leader Pow Wow Training: Dusty encourages Cub leaders to register for
Pow Wow which will be held Saturday, March 23 at Raleigh's Highland United
Methodist Church. Registration forms are available on the council web site
(www.campdurant.com) or our district web site (www.bsa.net/occo/danbeard).
10. High Adventure - Steve Stewart: The Venture Powder Horn training is on
schedule for May 24-28, 2002.
New Business - W.E. Medlin: W.E. and Rodger are trying to get the Dan
Beard District NESA group started. There is a note on our district web
site about starting the group. If you are an Eagle Scout and you can
help, contact W.E. or Rodger.
District Committee Member of the Month: Ed Walsh for his work as the FOS
Family Campaign Chairman.
Our next District Committee Meeting is scheduled for March 6, 2002 at 7:30 pm
in the library of the Cary First United Methodist Church.
The new calendar for the year of 2002 and the tentative calendar for 2003 are
on our district web site. The calendars have also been sent out to the
subscribers of our e-mail list server on YahooGroups/Dan Beard.
