Dan Beard District Committee Meeting Minutes
February 4, 1998
Attendees: Kathy Connelly, John Cortese, David Hearne, Roger Lear, Susan Long,
           Jim McSherry, W.E. Medlin, Steve Merritt, Larry Nessly, David Page,
           Bob Ratledge, Don Schmidt, Bill Slocumb, John Slocumb, Tom Stalker,
           Dan Walrod, Judy Ward, Ron Werley, Lisa White and Ed Williams


Minutes: January minutes were approved as written.
Opening: Pledge of Allegiance - Susan Long, Invocation - Bob Ratledge


                                   Reports:
Commissioner Service - David Hearne: Most of the recharter packets are out.
Ones for April units are in.  Will check with units at Mall Expo for questions,
problems, etc..

Boy Scout Program - Don Schmidt: Sub-Committees reporting:

Camping - W.E. Medlin: Passed around the Unit Camping Survey form for review.

Camporee - Ron Werley: Budget in place.  Patch designed and passed around for
comment.  Meeting with Cubs held and Dan Walrod is Vice-Chief for Cub Camping.
Meeting set 2/21 with unit reps (Scouts).  Camporee pamphlet will be available
at the Mall Expo on March 7.

Eagle Review Board - Jim McSherry & Bill Slocumb: 1 Eagle approved, 2 projects
approved and there are 8 projects scheduled so far for February.

Training - John Cortese: 8 teams signed up for 2/20 Bearclaw.  April SMF is on
track; SMF mail notice sent out to all SM's today, mailing to CM's, CC's and
WL's will be sent out soon.

Advancement - Ed Williams: Nothing to report as January advancements have not
been entered at the Council office.

Cub Scout Program - Dan Walrod: Sub-Committees reporting:

Advancement - Judy Ward: In Jan. 13 Bobcats, 6 Bears, 3 Webelos, 2 AOL and 5
out of 34 cub units showed advancement.

Training - Kathy Connelly: Pow-Wow 3/28 in Fayetteville (Register by 3/9) and
Dan Beard will host Tri-district Cub training on May 9.

Day Camp - Laura Purcell: (Not present - Dan Walrod reporting) Lake Wheeler is
reserved.  Committee will contact Laura and find out if she has staff lined up
and committed and if she has anyone to send to Cub Day Camp Director course.

Activities & Civic Service - Susan Long: Scout Sunday 2/8 and has had no
feedback from any units contacted by the committee by phone. Scouting for Food
bag distribution this Saturday, pickup 2/14.  Food Bank truck to be available
from 10 am to 3 pm on 2/14.  Cary News article appeared last week on Scouting
for Food.  Mall Expo has 1 unit signed up and 3 or 4 for Pinewood Derby.

OA - Larry Nessly: Election team training coming up soon.  Tony Cortese is
person to call for setting up unit elections.

High Adventure - Tom Stalker: 4/17-19 lake canoeing, 5/1-3 river canoeing.  Tom
will provide BS RT program in April and it will be on Safety Afloat.

Health & Safety - Steve Merritt: Nothing to report

Membership - Lisa White: Brochure promoting our Roundtable has been completed
by Lisa and it was passed around for review by the committee.  It will be
mailed to all units.  Cary News is considering an article to help us get adults
for Scouting (and Scouts).  We are up 216 youth, 80 adults and 1 unit over this
time last year.

Old Business: John Slocumb handed out the Goals and Objectives we set for our
district at the district retreat.  Everyone should read them, as John asks in
the cover letter, and bring up any comments, questions, etc..  We can always
add to the goals and objectives if you come up with something we didn't think
of during the retreat.

New Business: It was stated that we can wear the Quality Unit patch on our
uniforms because we are a Quality District.  Macedonia Methodist is booked for
1998 for our Roundtables and the Recognition Event (thanks to Ed Williams).
Lear reported that Walt Brothers is willing to help the district with
recruiting Commissioners.  Terry Wyrick is trying to find the NESA list from
the last NC Fair.  Fred Tutwiler has been asked to be the BS Roundtable
Commissioner.

Committee Member of the Month:  John Slocumb for putting together a really
great district retreat.

Executive Minute - David Page: David again thanked us for making our district a
Quality District and he presented all those present with a marble paperweight
with the Boy Scout Emblem on it.

Next Meeting: March 4, 1998 - REMEMBER we are now meeting at 7:30 pm.
