Attendees: Linda Boggs, Dusty Fletcher, Roger Lear, W.E. Medlin,
Rodger Skirvin, John Slocumb, Marvin Tharp, Gary Thorn, Judy Ward,
Ron Werley and Ed Williams (11)
This meeting was held on Friday night at the Becky Medlin Century 21 building
in Fuquay-Varina, as the first part of the 2001 District Planning Retreat.
1. Invocation and Pledge by Rodger Skirvin.
2. December 2000 minutes approved as read.
3. District Commissioner - Ron Werley: Ron reported that he had met all but 3
of the 12 goals set for 2000. He is still trying to recruit more UC's, a
Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner and a Roundtable ADC.
4. Boy Scout Program - W.E. Medlin for Jim McSherry: W.E. reported that we are
still looking for a Camping Chairperson and a Health & Safety Chairperson.
The Camping Chairperson should be someone who is familiar with Boy Scout
camping and is willing to do the camping survey and keep it updated.
Advancement - Ed Williams: Advancement records are finally getting recorded
by the Council. There seems to be a tendency of rejected Eagle Projects
developing, mainly due to the fact that the Scouts are not getting the
necessary adult help from the troop and the troop committee.
Eagle Board - Rudy Hines: Not present.
Training - John Slocumb: A Train The Trainer (TTT) course will be held on
February 3, 2001 at St. Giles Church, behind Fat Daddies, in Raleigh. The
cost is $20.00. The Council has 53 signed up for the SR 425 Wood Badge
course this fall. The course is limited to 64. The latest word is that
this course will be the last one that follows the same course outline as
past Wood Badge courses. The dates for the fall Wood Badge course are shown
on the District 2001 calendar.
5. Cub Program - Linda Boggs:
Cub Advancement - Judy Ward: Judy reported that September and October of
last year were the biggest months for the Bobcat award and that February
and April of last year were the biggest months for the Arrow of Light award.
Judy is trying to recruit someone to back her up on Cub Advancement.
Cub Day Camp - Linda Boggs: They are still looking for an additional Camp
Director, 2 Pixie Camp Directors and Boy Scouts to help with Cub Day Camp.
Cub Family Campout - Gary Thorn for Jenny Elwell: The Cub Family Campout
will be held on March 16-18, 2001 at Camp McNeill's Cub Scout World, where
it was held last year. Brochures on the Cub Family Campout are available
and pre-registration is much cheaper for the Packs and families.
Cub Training - Gary Thorn: Gary is recruiting a Training Committee to help
with the Cub BLT courses. A discussion led to the conclusion that having a
Dan Beard Cub BLT twice a year would be sufficient if we can co-ordinate the
BLT's with the Impeesa and Sequoyah District's BLT courses, so that there
would be at least six BLT courses per year (two from each of the districts).
There is a Webelos Leader Week-end (Outdoor) training session scheduled for
March 2-4, 2001 at Camp Durant.
6. Finance - Rodger Skirvin: Our goal for the Friends of Scouting in 2001 is
again $70,000. We are going to be finished with the drive by April 30th.
John Slocumb, a Co-Chairman for the Family Campaign, asked for units that
are interested in having a Friends of Scouting presentation made at their
Pack meeting or Court of Honor, to please contact him to schedule a date.
Popcorn - Dusty Fletcher: Dusty is the District Popcorn Kernel for 2001.
She is going to be talking to Marv Tharp and Sherri Garrett to get up to
speed on the Popcorn Sale for 2001.
7. Order of the Arrow - E-mail from Bob Taylor: The OA is continuing their
effort to put up a shelter in Campsite #4 at Camp Durant. They have raised
about $1000. Total cost of the Council plan for the shelter is $2500 to
$3000. The OA has found someone who will match any funds the Chapter raises
between now and March 31, 2001, $1 for $2. They are trying to find ways to
raise the money they need to get the matching funds. If anyone in our
district can help with their labor or donations, contact Bob Taylor at
387-7273 or e-mail him at bob@east.sun.com. PLEASE HELP!
8. Membership & Relationships - Marvin Tharp: Marv is our new District
Membership & Relationships Chairman for 2001. He reported that at the end
of 2000, we had 1790 Cubs, 1053 Boy Scouts and 86 Venturers for a total of
2929 boys. We had 36 Packs, 39 Troops and 10 Venture Crews for a total of
85 units at the end of 2000. In January of 1999 we had 1753 Cubs, 973 Boy
Scouts, 80 Venturers and 79 units.
9. Activities and Civic Service - Dusty Fletcher: Dusty reported that her
area had completed 4 of her goals last year, 2 were 50% completed and one
did not get done. She wanted to remind the units that the next 2 months
would be busy for them, as Scout Sunday and Scout Sabbath, Scouting For
Food and the Mall Expo and Pinewood Derby would be taking place. The dates
for these events and additional information has been placed on our District
Web Page to keep the units informed. The events have also been covered,
and will continue to covered, at our Roundtables.
Committee Member of the Month: Ron Werley for his work as our District
Commissioner and as a stand-in for the Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner.
Next District Committee Meeting: February 7, 2001 in the Cary First United
Methodist Church Library at 7:30 pm.
