Our meeting was held on the first night of our annual retreat in Fuquay-Varina.
1. Blessing and Invocation by Stan Belyeu. Dusty introduced Chris Poss, who
is the 2002 Mall Expo Co-Chairman. W.E. then made the announcement that
Stan Belyeu is stepping down as District Vice-Chairman in March and that
Susan Long had agreed to take Stan's place as our District Vice-Chairman.
2. December minutes approved.
3. District Commissioner - Ron Werley: We now have 31 UC's on the Commissioner
Staff. The unit inventories were completed on time.
Roundtable ADC - Gary Thorn: Attendance is going down again, but we are
getting a lot of information out. Gary and Jenny presented Pack 253 and
Troop 316 with new HP inkjet printers for having the best attendance at RT.
Cub Roundtable ADC - Jenny Elwell: We are getting good attendance by unit
Cubmasters, only a few Cub Den Leaders and no Webelos Den Leaders.
4. Boy Scout Program - Ed Walsh:
Advancement - Ed Williams: 3 Troops & 1 Crew had advancement in January.
Eagle Board of Review - Ed Williams for Tom Allen: 2 Eagles and 3 projects
approved in December, for a total of 65 Eagle's in 2001. 3 Eagles and 3
projects were approved in January.
Training - Susan Long: The new Wood Badge course is only 2 weekends long,
but they run from Friday morning until Sunday evening. The council JLT
training course is being headed up by Tom Doligalski. Dan Beard is going to
attempt to have a Troop Committee and Chartered Organization Representative
training course within the next 3 months. Venture Leader training is on
schedule for February 16th, 2002 somewhere in the Southern Scouting area.
Venture leader Powder Horn (Hi-Adventure type training) is being held on May
24-28, 2002. Contact the council Scout Office for locations and times.
Susan has agreed to oversee and coordinate for the council all of the
training courses publicity.
Spring Camporee - Ron Werley: The camporee registrar, Bob Gamble, has made
a web site for the camporee and units are using it to pick a campsite and
register. The web site is shown on the district web site. The camporee
budget is being done and the port-a-lets have been ordered.
5. Cub Program - Linda Boggs:
Advancement - Pam Sen: December reported 7 Bobcats, 14 Wolves, 10 Bears,
4 Webelos and 16 Arrows of Light for a total of 51 Cub Scout advancements.
November's report was revised to report 14 Bobcats, 8 Wolves, 1 Bear and
17 Webelos for a total of 40 Cub Scout advancements.
Training - Laura Wester: BALOO (Cub leader outdoor basic training) is being
held on March 16, 2002 at Camp Reeves (registration form is on our website).
A Trainer Development Conference (the old TTT) is being held on March 9.
Cub Day Camp - Linda Boggs: The registration forms and information packets
are being constructed and should be available soon.
Cub Family Campout - Jenny Elwell for Randy Ellis: The program is set for
the April 12-14, 2002 campout. Contact Jenny or Randy for more information.
6. Finance - R. Skirvin: The FOS breakfast is scheduled for April 30. Lewis
Prosper is handling Cary and heading up the Community Campaign, with David
Bell doing Fuquay-Varina, Chris Brophy doing Garner and Mitch Morgan doing
Apex.
Family Campaign Chairman Ed Walsh: 27 Packs and 29 Troops have signed up
to have FOS presentations at their units. This surpasses the 36 units that
signed up last year. Four units have had presenataions already and the
giving is at a higher level than in 2001. They hope to finish by April 30.
Popcorn - Dusty Fletcher: Dusty has agreed to be our District Kernel for
2002. She is trying to recruit a Co-Kernel.
7. Camping - John Slocumb: John now has the responsiblity for both Cub and
Boy Scout Camping coordination and reporting. He reported that we had 199
Cub Scouts and 19 Tigers attending our 2001 Cub Day Camp, with 62 Boy Scouts
assisting with the Cub Day Camp. We had 16 Webelos at the Cub Resident Camp
over-nighter. We had 20 of our Boy Scout Troops (418 Scouts) attend Summer
Camp's at locations other than our Occoneechee Scout Reservation and we had
13 Troops (133 Scouts) attend Summer Camp at our Scout Reservation, for a
total of 33 units attending Summer Camp with a total of 551 Scouts.
8. Order of the Arrow - Tom Doligalski: Youth elections last year filled only
4 out of the 7 possible nominations. Brotherhood conversion will be held at
the Chapter OA meetings (on Roundtable night) for February and March 2002.
The Chapter is going to create their own newsletter. The OA will provide
the staffing for the Scouting For Food collection sites on February 9, 2002.
9. Membership/Relationships - Marv Tharp: At the end of 2001 we had 17 more
Scouts than we had in 2000, with a total membership of 2946. However, we
we came up 54 short of our objective of 3000 and we were 42 short on the
number of Cub Scouts needed to meet the Quality District requirements. Our
district has only increased by about 700 Scouts since 1995.
10. Activities and Civic Service - Dusty Fletcher: The Mall Expo is coming up
on March 2, 2002. Jim Conrad, the Pinewood Derby Chairman thinks that the
races may take up to 10 1/2 hours this year. Chris Poss is helping the
Elwell's with the total Mall Expo planning and organization. Scouting For
Food is February 2 and 9, 2002. Dusty has created a new incentive program
for those doing Scouting For Food. Each Scout that collects at least 50
pounds of food will receive a Dan Beard District Scouting For Food patch.
11. High Adventure - Steve Stewart: Council has 3 events in 2002 that Steve
wants to promote (they are on our calendar). Natural Rock Climbing on
March 8-10 at Pilot Mountain, Tower Operation Certification on May 3-4 at
Camp Durant & COPE Staff training on April 6 & September 7 at Camp Durant.
District Committee Member of the Month: W.E. Medlin for his outstanding job as
our District Chairman (and for the delicious chicken he grills for our
Christmas party). Thank you, W.E. (and Becky)!
The new calendar for the year of 2002 and the tentative calendar for 2003 are
on our district web site. The calendars will also be sent out to the
subscribers to our e-mail list server on YahooGroups/Dan Beard.
