January 7, 1998
Attendees: David Page, John Slocumb, Ed Williams, Ron Werley, Bill Slocumb,
Susan Long, Bob Ratledge, David Hearne, Judy Ward, Jim McSherry,
Kathy Connelly, Steve Merritt, W.E. Medlin, Roger Lear
Minutes: December minutes were approved as written.
Old Business: John Slocumb covered some of the items for the District Retreat
on 1/16-1/18/98 - Bob Ratledge, Don Schmidt and Dan Walrod will be responsible
to take minutes for their respective areas. John Slocumb wants everyone to
bring written down realistic goals for 1998 and 1999. Members are to be served
supper on Friday night at 7 pm (John's letter mistakenly said "no supper").
The meeting will start at 8 pm. Bring about $10.00 per person for all 4 meals.
7 pm for supper and the program starts at 8 pm. We will be sleeping on bunks.
The Retreat will end sometime around Sunday noon.
New Business: Motion made to have Committee Meetings start at 7:30 pm and end
at 9:00 pm, instead of 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm. Reason was to give committee
members more time to get to the meeting. We will try the new meeting time for
6 months and see how it works. Motion passed with 2 dissentions.
Activities & Civic Service: Steve Merritt reported as Holmes Merritt is the
OA person in charge of Scouting for Food this year. Steve said that bags can
be stored at the First Methodist Church office for pickup by those that miss
getting their bags at the Roundtable. Susan Long reported that the bags will
be supplied by Winn Dixie (not pre-printed bags as Council waited to late this
year to get them printed), but they will come supplied with a slip of paper to
put in the bags explaining the process for people to follow for pickup, etc..
Kathi Barnes is taking care of Fuquay-Varina, Jerri Mangum is handling the
Garner units. Apex and Cary units will deliver the food to the same site as
last year (Old Rose's parking lot on Kildaire Farm Road). Steve and Holmes
were asked to make sure they get property owners approval and the insurance
waiver for the Scouts. The delivery times will be from 10 am to 2 pm on 2/14
with the bags being distributed to the population on 2/7/98.
Mall Expo, Scout Sunday and Scouting for Food writeups were mailed out from the
Scout Office to all units on 1/7/98. Susan Long assigned committee members to
call the units and stress the importance of the 3 events. Units should be
called sometime between Jan. 12 and 14. Copies of the letter that went out to
the units were distributed to the committee members. Mall Expo theme is
"Scouting - A Lifetime of Adventure" and Dusty Fletcher is the Chairperson for
the Mall Expo. Pack 165 will be in charge of running the Pinewood Derby and
copies of the Derby rules were sent with the Mall Expo letter.
Commissioner Service: David Hearne reported that all is going well and he
provided a new Key 3 listing to committee members, which now includes the date
the unit info was gathered and the number of youth and adults in the unit.
Boy Scout Program:
Camping: Ron Werley, the Camporee Chief, stated that the unit youth members
are to step up to their program plans by the next Roundtable. The theme is
"Actions of a Scout". Joey Doster is VC of Program and Steve Stewart has
agreed to be the Vice Chief of the Camporee. Lear committed to do Tshirts.
Training: Bill Slocumb & Jim McSherry stated that in December we had 3 finals
and 14 projects up for approval. 9 or 10 of the project reports need more
work. Some discussion was held on how we reach leaders that are "not part of
the choir". The February is on schedule, Larry Nessly is the Scoutmaster. SMF
in April is hosted by Sequoyah, Glenn Davis is Scoutmaster.
Cub Scout Program:
Advancement: Judy Ward gave the report that 24 out of 29 units had advancement
and only 4 (or 5) Packs have not had any advancement in the last 2 months.
Training: Kathy Connelly reported that Impeesa is having a Cub BLT Jan. 17, so
she is not having a district BLT on Jan. 24. Council is having a Pow-Wow in
Fayetteville on March 28. A Tri-District BLT will be held May 9 with Dan Beard
as the host.
Other Committee Reports:
Safety Report: Steve Merritt says that some sort of formal training is needed
for unit leaders (and parents) to introduce them to the BSA Safety Rules. He
is working on doing this.
Membership: David Page reported that we are up 212 Scouts and 100 adults from
last year at this time, for a total of 2654 youth (vs 2442 last year) and a
growth of 8.68% over last year. We have 1700 Cubs vs 1544 last year (10%).
Finance: Work is proceeding with Don Dixon (CP&L) as he heads up our FOS.
Popcorn: Roger Lear and Ed Williams reported that we reached $159,000 in sales
and it looks like it may hit $160,000. Units did a fabulous job of selling.
It was determined that some units are selling last year's popcorn and it has
caused one problem. Everyone was cautioned that we are hurting our sales if we
sell outdated popcorn. Give it away or sell it in the units at 1/2 price,
etc., but don't hold it for a year and then try to sell it.
Committee Members of the Month: Roger Lear and Ed Williams for Popcorn Sale
Executive Minute: David Page reported that Dan Beard is a Quality District for
1997, one of the 3 in the Council. He thanked everyone for their fine jobs.
Meeting adjourned at 9 pm. Next meeting is February 4, 1998 (REMEMBER at 7:30)
