Attendees: Stan Belyeu, Roger Lear, W.E. Medlin, Rodger Skirvin, John Slocumb,
Steve Stewart, Marvin Tharp, Ron and Nancy Werley (9)
1. Invocation/blessing by Rodger Skirvin. Then some great hot dogs and
hamburgs, beans, chili and home made ice cream from W.E. and Becky! Thanks!
2. May minutes approved. W.E. thanked all of the committee members for their
work so far this year. He hopes we will continue the good work in the
second half of 2001. He wants to get more of our units actively involved
in the district programs and will work with the committee to implement that.
We need more information on the adventure camps available to Venture Crews.
3. District Commissioner - Ron Werley: Ron has lost 5 UCs this year and signed
up 3 new UCs this year. All of our charters have not been entered so we are
not sure where we are, but 81 out of 83 units re-chartered on time. He is
still working on some of his goals. Gary Thorn has agreed to be our new
ADC for Round Table.
4. Boy Scout Program - No report.
Eagle Board - John Slocumb for Rudy Hines: 8 finals were approved in May
and out of 8 projects for May, 4 needed more work and 1 was rejected.
Training - John Slocumb: John reported that he also, like Ron, did not meet
all of his goals. The TTT course information is still not available to us.
High Adventure - Steve Stewart: High Adventure met all of their goals, but
some of the canoe handling has not been held yet.
5. Cub Program - No report.
Cub Training - Gary Thorn via e-mail: The June 2nd Cub BLT was attended by
43 cub leaders. Pack 10, 102, 120, 165, 201, 202, 216, 218, 312, 316, 320,
392 and 397 were represented as well as a pack from Impessa and a pack from
Sequoyah. Gary thanks Linda Boggs, Tony Todaro, Steve Ennis, Steve Fuller,
Jim Conrad and Gary and Laura Wester for their help in doing the BLT. This
was the first time we used the new leader essentials material and leader
specific information from the National Training material.
Impessa will be doing a BLT in September and Dan Beard is planning to do
one in October and hopefully, Sequoyah will do one in November.
6. Membership/Relationships - Marvin Tharp:
Spring Roundup - Marv for Rhonda Chesson: Rhonda and her helpers delivered
flyers to 34 elementary schools. The roundup numbers are not in yet, but
Marv said Rhonda and her helpers did a super job on the roundup.
Fall Roundup - Marvin Tharp for Rhonda Chesson: Rhonda is planning the
August 23 roundup for 4 locations, probably schools in various areas. More
will be explained at the August committee meeting.
Religious Awards - Marvin Tharp: Marv has received Religious Emblem Display
training, which details how the Religious Awards should be presented. Marv
was asked and is willing to use his training to do the Religious Awards
presentations at our annual Recognition Event.
7. Finance - Rodger Skirvin: The May 9th Friends of Scouting breakfast was a
big success and helped us reach a final total of $72,000, which is $2,000
over our $70,000 goal for 2001 by the end of May. Rodger thanks everyone.
Popcorn - Rodger Skirvin for Dusty Fletcher: The District Area Kernel
training will be held June 23rd, from 10 am to noon at the old RR depot in
Angier, NC. The Unit Popcorn Kernel training will be held September 4th,
from 7 to 9 pm at St. Francis UMC. We currently have 30 units signed up.
8. Activities and Civic Service - Dusty Fletcher (via phone): Dusty said she
will need help from our committee with the setup from 3 to 5 pm on the 16th,
and for each committee member to bring a dessert to share. We plan to
prepare food for the first 100 people there between 6 and 6:30 pm. We will
not charge for the meal this year, in case that caused last year's disaster.
9. Order of the Arrow - Steve Stewart for Bob Taylor: The shelter at Campsite
#4 was finished in time for the Conclave. Good work, folks!
District Committee Member of the Month: Rhonda Chesson for her work on the
Spring Roundup.
ALL SCOUTERS TAKE NOTE: There will be NO District Committee Meeting and NO
Round Table in the month of July. Refer to the calendar below. Ed Williams
fell off a ladder while working on the Durant Cope Course and broke his left
heel into 8 pieces. The surgery on June 4 went well and he is home with a new
steel plate and 12 screws in his left heel. He says he is doing well but does
regret that he will miss Summer Camp, Climbing School and National Jamboree.
He will be back on line with us on a limited basis by September or October.
Calendar for the rest of June, July and August:
