Attendees: Tom Allen, Linda Boggs, Dusty Fletcher, Roger Lear, Susan Long,
W.E. Medlin, Rodger Skirvin, John Slocumb, Steve Stewart,
Marv Tharp, Gary Thorn, Ron Werley, Laura Wester & Ed Williams (14)
This was our 6 month review meeting. W.E. and Becky Medlin hosted a hot dog
and hamburg meal at their business location. Everyone brought something to
share and we all had a nice meal. Our thanks go to W.E. and Becky!
1. Invocation by Rodger Skirvin
2. April minutes approved, with the notation that the meeting was held at
Medlin Realty rather than at their home (the April minutes were incorrect).
3. District Commissioner - Ron Werley: Ron missed some of his goals but states
that he will try to do better next year. On many of his goals he is at the
mercy of the units and when they don't respond well, his goals suffer.
ADC Roundtable Commissioner - Gary Thorn: Gary is gathering the e-mail
addresses of Roundtable attendees. He hopes to be able to communicate to
them what they missed if they miss a Roundtable. He is also working on
some other ideas to try and increase the Roundtable attendance and results.
The August Roundtable Kick-off meal will be held at St. Andrew's Catholic
Church in Apex. A note has been made on our web site and an e-mail went
out to the YahooGroups list server mentioning no meeting in July and the
changed location and time for the August Roundtable with directions on how
to find the church. Also that we will do Health and Safety Certification
at the August Roundtable.
4. Boy Scout Program - Ed Walsh:
Program - Ed Walsh via e-mail: Need to have a showcase event in August of
next year to help Membership get new Scouts. Some units are doing their
advancement paperwork only once a year! That is not right folks!
If your unit needs a Merit Badge Counselor, come to Roundtable or use
YahooGroups to ask other units if they will share their counselor with you.
Advancement - Ed Williams: Ed reported that 4 Troops had advancement in May.
He is still getting updates on 2001 advancement half way thru 2002.
Eagle Board of Review - Tom Allen: 4 Eagles had their final review and were
approved in May. They can always use adult help with the Boards of Review.
Training - Susan Long: JLTC is scheduled for July 21-27 at Camp Reeves.
Woodbadge has about 36 signed up but they need more Cub adults for the
course. There will be another TDC training session on Sept. 7th in Chapel
Hill. There was some discussion about having a Youth Protection/Health and
Safety course offered soon as adults are supposed to renew it every 2 years.
Dusty contacted Ken Moore and he said an instructor for the course had to:
1. Be registered with the BSA
2. Have completed Youth Protection within the last 5 years
3. Have completed the course as a participant in the course being taught
4. Served on WB Staff or have completed TTT or TDC or Cub Wood Badge
5. Meet all staff member requirements in the syllabus or guide
The May 4th training sessions had about 130 for New Leader Essentials,
50 at Cub Specific Training, 58 at Troop Committee Challange & 14 at COR
Training. Quite a few of the attendees were from Dan Beard District.
SM/ASM Specific training will be held June 15 at St. Giles in Raleigh.
5. Cub Program - Linda Boggs:
Training - Laura Wester: The May 4th Cub Specific Leader training went
well with 50 in attendance for a combination of New Leader Essentials and
Cub Scout Leader Specific Training. Laura has met all her goals except for
the one page handout for Cub Scouters.
Cub Day Camp - Linda Boggs: Cub Day Camp has 87 registered for week #1 and
98 for week #2. Registration ended on June 1 and the forms were removed
from the web site and a note made as to the end of registration.
Cub Family Campout - Linda Boggs: The Cub Family Campout for 2003 has been
scheduled for April 4 thru April 6, 2003.
6. Finance - Rodger Skirvin: The Major Gift Campaign has collected $32,700.
The Community Campaign has raised $3410 and the Family Campaign, which hoped
to raise $43,000 has reached $45,380. The FOS right now is over the $77,000
goal and standing at $81,490.
Popcorn - Dusty Fletcher: The District and Area Kernel meetings have been
held. Changes are coming with the Scout Buck and a new prize program. We
had 49 units sell last year and this year we hope to sign up 55 units. The
council wants a 15% increase in the Scouts selling popcorn. The Unit Kernel
meeting for our district will be held on September 3, we think at St.
Francis UMC in Cary. Longistics, Inc. (out past RDU airport) has again
this year consented to allow us to distribute the popcorn from their plant.
7. Camping - John Slocumb: John will check our units to find out where they
attended Summer Camp. He has contacted the OA Advisor to see if the OA will
work on updating the "Where to Camp" booklet for this year. Our Occoneechee
Summer Camp has a full first 4 weeks and week 5 has some openings still.
8. High Adventure - Steve Stewart: There will be a Venturing recruiting and
training weekend October 18-20, 2002. More information will follow.
9. Membership/Relationships - Marv Tharp: Tiger packets went out to K-5 school
groups and the office has had 25 calls asking for more information. They
are trying to set up Join Scouting night for August 29, with unit rep
training on August 6, 2002.
Total membership this month was 2354; 1209 Cubs, 1057 Scouts and 88 Crews.
We have 86 units, 34 Packs, 38 Troops and 14 Crews. Last year at this time
we had 84 units and 2266 in membership.
10. Activities and Civic Service - Dusty Fletcher: A Scout Uniform sale and
Scouting for Food went pretty well last year, so they will be done again in
2003. See Item #12 about Mall Expo for 2003.
11. New Business - District NESA group - W.E. Medlin: W.E. reported that the
group could be made up of the 378 Eagles, over the age of 24, that are
in our District. The initial meeting and meal was a success.
12. The Committee has decided to eliminate the Mall Expo for 2003. Attendance
and interest are down. We are going to try to plan a showcase event for
sometime next year, which would replace the Mall Expo. The Pinewood Derby
would remain in place and on the same date as is on the 2003 calendar.
District Committee Members of the Month: Susan Long, Marvin Tharp and Laura
Wester for heading up the May 4 training sessions at Sony-Ericsson at RTP.
ALL PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING!:
THERE IS NO DISTRICT COMMITTEE MEETING OR ROUNDTABLE IN JULY.
The next District Committee meeting will be held on August 7, 2002 at 7:30 pm
