Opening: Pledge of Allegiance - David Hearne, Invocation - Bob Ratledge
Minutes: May minutes were approved as written.
Introductions of Council Key 3 - John Slocumb
Commissioner Service - David Hearne: David has started a database on leaders
of units that have dropped. Pack 356 has lapsed and Pack and Troop 159 have
dropped and Troop 393 has dropped. The Roundtable ADC and Boy Scout Roundtable
Commissioner have not yet been recruited, but have been approached. We are
waiting for their answer. Inventory calls to units will start on June 17. We
are looking for a new location for the Roundtable as it appears we have lost
Macedonia UM Church as a meeting place.
Boy Scout Program - Don Schmidt:
Sub-Committees reporting:
Camping - W.E. Medlin: W.E.'s report on the troop camping survey was given to
the Committee and the Council Key 3 at the end of the meeting. W.E. presented
the easel sized charts (thanks to Bill Slocumb) that covered the major findings
of the survey. 22 troops (with a total of 574 scouts) responded to the
survey. Our larger troops go to out of council camps more often than the
smaller ones.
Advancement - Ed Williams: There were about 13 units not advancing in May as
far as he can tell. The Council is still lagging on advancement records.
Eagle Board of Review - Jim McSherry and Bill Slocumb: Jim and Bill reported
6 projects and 6 final reviews in May, all approved. Next month there is an
estimated 4 project reviews and 6 final reviews scheduled.
Training - John Cortese: The next Tri-District SMF Course is scheduled for
September 11-13, 1998. The Council JLT has 34 signed up and Larry Nessly
would like to have 48. Call Larry at 468-5227 if you have any candidates.
Camporee - Ron Werley and Stephen Stewart: A camporee critique was
Presented in written form and a few key comments were made by them.
Cub Scout Program - Dan Walrod:
Sub-Committees reporting:
Training - Kathy Connelly: The Tri-District Cub training on May 9 had 27
attendees, with about 1/2 of them from Dan Beard. Next Tri-District Cub
Training is in September and Impeesa will be the host district.
Advancement - Judy Ward: There were 25 Bobcats, 32 Wolves, 25 Bears, 44
Webelos and 11 Arrows of Light in May; with 27 out of 35 Packs advancing.
Cub Day Camp - Jewel Ward reporting for Laura Purcell: 250 Cubs and Webelos
are signed up for Cub Day Camp from June 22-26. Lake Wheeler has had some major
improvements made to their facilities and roads. They need 25 Den Chiefs and
5 adult Den Leaders for that week. A mailing has been made to the Scoutmasters
in our district asking for Den Chiefs. Please help if you can!
Membership - No Report
OA - Larry Nessly: The second shelter did not get constructed at Campsite #4,
but will be done soon. Larry said the OA will continue contacting units this
year to see if they need an OA election team to come to their units. The OA
Ceremonies Team did a good job at the OA Inductions in May. There was one
suggestion made; that the OA not move the induction areas without letting the
parents and guests know, as some of them missed seeing their sons inducted
after they had driven to the Occoneechee Reservation to see the inductions.
High Adventure Exploring - Tom Stalker: Tom reported that we now have another
HA Post with 8 members in Post 391. Canoeing had 16 adults who did the river
and lake course. We need more canoe courses every year and of course, new
canoes. Training for canoeing and kayaking will be held every Wednesday night
from 6:30 to 9:00 pm at Lake Crabtree. Call Tom at 467-4808 if you want info.
Activities and Civic Service - Susan Long: There is still no answer as to
whether we will have a uniform sale this year. They are discussing it with
Dick Fletcher. The August Roundtable Roundup cookout will have Bill Bayless
and George Brewer as cooks and Don Williams has arranged a cooker for us to
use. Susan will chair the Recognition Event in November. She will not return
to us next year as Activities and Civic Service Chairlady. She is trying to
find a replacement for the position. She has been a tremendous chairlady!
Larry Nessly committed the OA to do the Scouting for Food drive for 1998.
Health & Safety - Steve Merritt: Steve gave a 20 minute pitch on unit safety
at the Camporee. A new Safe Guide to Scouting has been published. Council
Aquatics, Richard Connelly reported, is willing to go to the units to give a 1
hour program on Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat. If your unit is
interested contact Richard at 779-6874.
Popcorn - Ed Williams: Popcorn sale will run from September 28 to October 30,
with delivery on November 14, 1998 and money due to council on December 4. Ed
has recruited 5 area popcorn kernels and is looking for at least 3 more.
Training for the area kernels will be on June 22 at the Shearon Harris Nuclear
facility. The goal for our district for 1998 is approximately $200,000.00.
Finance - David Page: The Tri-District stands at $130,707 of the $145,000 goal
and is having a telethon on June 9 at 6:30 at the Scout Office. If you can
help please show up at that time (call David first) and you will get a pizza
and soda supper. Then on that Friday they will hold a telethon to the
businesses to ask them for FOS donations. They need help then also.
Other Business: District web site is up and running. If you have information
to put on it contact Bill Slocumb at 469-2247 to find out what you need to do.
Committee Members of the Month: W.E. Medlin for his work on the troop survey.
Fireside Chat - Council Key 3: Report on the state of the council and some
thoughts on the camping survey. We have twice as many Council Cubs as we do
Boy Scouts. They want 20,000 scouts by 2000. Only 48% of leaders are trained.
