Attendees: Stan Belyeu, Linda Boggs, Herb Council, Tom Doligalski,
Randy Ellis, Jenny Elwell, Dusty Fletcher, Roger Lear, Susan Long,
Rodger Skirvin, John Slocumb, Steve Stewart, Marvin Tharp,
Ed Walsh, Judy Ward, Ron Werley, Laura Wester & Ed Williams (18)
1. Pledge and Invocation by Stan Belyeu. Stan chaired this meeting in the
absence of W.E. Medlin. It was Stan's last meeting as Vice Chairman.
2. February minutes approved.
3. District Commissioner - Ron Werley: The unit charters have been handed out
but none have been returned yet. Ron has asked his UC's and ADC's to be at
the March Roundtable to help any units that need help with re-chartering.
He will advertise via Yahoogroups those units that have re-chartered and
those units that have not re-chartered. There are 2 units that will fold.
Pack 213 at Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian Church is not going to re-charter
as they cannot find a Cubmaster. Pack 361 at Westover United Methodist
Church is not going to re-charter as have no Cubs for their unit.
4. Boy Scout Program - Ed Walsh:
Advancement - Ed Williams: Ed reported that 9 Troops and 2 Crews had
advancement in February. Tom Allen and Ed did a really good job of going
over Eagle Board of Review problems and solutions at the February Roundtable
and we got several comments that it was well worth attending the meeting.
Eagle Board of Review - Ed Williams for Tom Allen: 7 Eagles and 7 projects
were approved in February.
Training - Susan Long: The new Wood Badge flyer is available at the Scout
Office and on the web site. The cost of the course is $190 but that covers
all the catered meals. The Council has approved the May 4 training date for
Troop Committees, Chartered Organization Representatives and New Leader
Essentials. Flyers are available on our web site and the Council web site.
Spring Camporee - Ron Werley: The budget has been turned in and the patches
ordered. The theme is Pioneering and units are signing up on the Camporee
web site. Troop 232 has agreed to do the cracker barrel on Friday night.
5. Cub Program - Linda Boggs:
Advancement - Rodger Skirvin for Pam Sen: February reports show that we had
79 Tigers, 3 Bobcats, 70 Wolves, 88 Bears, 82 Webelos and 64 Arrows of Light
for a total of 386 advancements in Cub Scouting.
Training - Laura Wester: Susan and Laura have been working with the Tri-
District teams on a training course schedule for 2002 and 2003. We will
publish them on Yahoogroups and the web site as soon as the Council has
approved them.
Cub Day Camp - Linda Boggs: The budget for Cub Day Camp has been set and
the information and registration forms put on our web site.
Cub Family Campout - Randy Ellis: Jenny Elwell has agreed to be program
chairlady for the campout. Randy says they could use some more volunteers
and Jenny asks for people to bring uncoated coat hangers and small vegetable
and soup cans to the Roundtable to use on the campout for crafts. The web
site now has the Family Campout flyer (see 2002 Family Campout).
6. Finance - R. Skirvin: We have collected about $35,000 so far on our goal
for 2002. Wayne Lutz is going to head up the Cary Community Campaign.
Family Campaign Chairman Ed Walsh: Thirty-six of our units have donated
$33,128.00 to our FOS Campaign. The original target was $34,000 and they
have about twenty-four units that have not had FOS presentations. Ed could
use some help doing the remaining presentations.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Ed has the Packmaster and Troopmaster software for all
those units who have had FOS Family Campaign presentations. Contact Ed to
get your unit's copy of the software.
7. Camping - John Slocumb: John has received 3 Camping Surveys from units.
He will send out a note on Yahoogroups asking units to complete the survey.
8. LDS Liaison - Herb Council: Herb had no report to give.
9. Order of the Arrow - Tom Doligalski: This month the OA will meet on March
14th at 7:00 pm at the Raleigh First United Pentecostal Church (our normal
Roundtable location). At this special meeting they will pass OA Ordeal
members into the OA Brotherhood membership. If the Ordeal members have done
their homework for the Brotherhood it can take about 1/2 hour to advance.
10. Membership/Relationships - Marv Tharp: His committee has put together a
plan for a county wide Spring Roundup. Flyers that go home with the school
age kids will have a tear-off portion on the flyer that interested parties
can send in to the Council to receive an information packet about Scouting.
The flyer distribution will be on May 10th. His committee discussed having
a Scout Expo for the Fall Roundup, but decided on a regular roundup method.
The Council will have a May "Lamplighter" event to ask organizations to
think about sponsoring new units. Marv is trying to build a committee to
promote that program. Dan Bryson is helping Marv find resourses (time,
talent and funding). The Fall Roundup is tentatively scheduled for August
11, 2002. Marv is trying to develop the "relationships" part of his job by
promoting the Chartered Organization Rep training to be held at RTP on
May 4. The flyers for that training are on our web site.
As of this month our District has 1746 Cubs, 1113 Scouts, 101 Venturers for
a total membership of 2960 in 36 Packs, 39 Troops and 13 Venture Crews.
11. Activities and Civic Service - Dusty Fletcher:
Scouting for Food: We had 75% more units than last year and we collected
48% more food than last year. Our goal was 8,300 pounds and we ended up
getting 13,089 pounds or 6 1/2 tons of food. It was delivered to nine
food distribution sites in our area. Thanks to Dusty and her family and
the OA members who did most of the sorting and delivering. However, the
real credit goes to the 19 Packs and 16 Troops who gathered the food! This
was the third largest Scouting for Food we have ever had. You can see the
records on our web site (2002 Scouting for Food or our Historical Records).
Cub Leader Pow Wow Training: Remember the Cub leader Pow Wow training to
be held Saturday, March 23 at Raleigh's Highland United Methodist Church.
Information on our web site (www.bsa.net/occo/danbeard) and the Council's.
Mall Expo - Jenny Elwell for Bruce Elwell: We had 3 Packs and 5 Troops do
displays at the Mall Expo. The demos were well received by the public and
about 100 Scouts enjoyed showing their skills. The judging results for the
displays can be seen on our web site (see 2002 Mall Exposition).
Pinewood Derby - Dusty Fletcher for Jim Conrad: We had 31 Packs enter
260 Cubs in the races, 179 racers and 81 entered the design competition for
the Pinewood Derby. The races went more smoothly than they ever have
thanks to Jim and the Pack 218 race officials. This was Jim's and Pack
218's last year of doing the derby. We need someone to step up to the job
for next year. The Derby results have been posted on our web site.
12. High Adventure - Steve Stewart: We have put the National High Adventure
camping information on the web site. You can even go to Alaska to train!
Look under our High Adventure site map to view the information.
District Committee Members of the Month: Jim Conrad and the Pack 218 race team
and Bruce Elwell and Chris Poss for their work on the 2002 Derby and Mall Expo.
Our next District Committee Meeting is scheduled for April 3, 2002 at 7:30 pm
in the library of the Cary First United Methodist Church.
