Minutes: February minutes were approved as written.
Reports:
Commissioner Service - David Hearne: First off, David & Julia had a son born
February 19 at 8:36 pm, boy #3, name Thomas Clendaniel Hearne; Congratulations!
Still have a few recharter packets to go out. Recharter turn-in at All Saints
Orthodox Church on Buck Jones Road, March 31, from 7 to 9 pm.
Boy Scout Program - Don Schmidt: Don wants to have a District BS program
meeting with some of the committee to caucus ideas and items of some concern
to the BS Program Committee.
Sub-Committees reporting:
Camping - W.E. Medlin: Camping surveys approved and will be mailed out to SM's
soon. Please give any camping book lists, references, camping places, etc. to
W.E. so that he can put together a listing for Scout leaders. The internet has
loads of data for camping places, military base use and 4 Scout Web Sites that
he has found so far. If you know of more, contact W.E.
Camporee - Ron Werley: Camporee booklet completed and they will have it for the
Mall Expo this coming Saturday, March 7.
Advancement - Ed Williams: 11 Troops reported advancement in February, with 3
Life Scouts and 1 Eagle approved by National.
Eagle Review Board - Jim McSherry & Bill Slocumb: 5 projects approved, 1
rejected and 2 final Eagle approvals.
Training - John Cortese: Bearclaw had about 40 participants and good weather.
All 3 districts were well represented both on staff and as participants. SMF
is proceeding on schedule and JLT adult staff is in place and Larry Nessly is
working on filling the JLT boy staff.
Cub Scout Program - Dan Walrod: Sub-Committees reporting:
Advancement - Judy Ward: In Feb. 5 Bobcats, 79 Wolves, 89 Bears, 57 Webelos and
37 AOL's (WOW!) and 17 out of 34 cub units showed advancement. Only Pack 211
has shown no advancement for at least 2 months.
Training - Kathy Connelly: 3/28 Pow-Wow registration is very low (3/9 final
registration date). Tri-district Cub training on May 9.
Day Camp - Laura Purcell: (Not present - John Slocumb reporting) Cub Day Camp
will have a meeting at Laura's house on March 16 at 7:30 pm to go over Day
Camp plans. Cub Day Camp flyers are supposed to be available at the Mall Expo.
Health & Safety - Steve Merritt: There will be a short H&S meeting at the
Camporee. Steve will contact Roy Alfred to see if he can make some extra
copies of the H&S BSA manual for handouts at the meeting.
Membership - Lisa White: Map of Holly Springs & Fuquay-Varina and map of
Garner and Raleigh are done; Cary/Morrisville/Apex will be by Mall Expo time.
Lisa is going great guns on unit prospects; 2 Hi Adventure Posts and a Team are
being worked on, 3 new Troops in process, 2 new Packs in process. Pack 15 is a
new pack for Cary's Mount Zion Church, with a Troop to come once the Pack is
going. Unit prospects are needed for the Garner area. If you know of any
possible unit sponsors in the Garner area, contact Lisa. Membership is up 194
youth over last year (7.7%) and we are plus one unit over this time last year.
Activities & Civic Service - Susan Long: Scout Sunday was well supported in our
district. Ribbons for those units will be available at the March Round Table.
Scouting for Food collected about 9,000 pounds of food in our district. Thanks
go to the OA and all those people involved in the 39 units that participated
and provided much needed food to the 5 agencies receiving the food.
Mall Expo - Dusty Fletcher: Only 5 Troops and 8 Packs have signed up so far,
this after an August mailing and calls to the units by Dusty. 22 Packs are
signed up for the Pinewood Derby, so we know the units know about the Mall Expo
but we aren't sure why the response has been so weak. We'll see March 7.
Kathy Connelly needs help with the Pinewood Derby design judging and any other
help you can give on March 7. Join them at 7 am on March 7 at the mall for
setup. Kathy says she will even provide you with a free donut if you help.
OA - Larry Nessly: The OA team is doing elections. Larry will talk to Tony
Cortese about contacting the units to see if they need an OA election.
Finance - David Page: Wake Co. has reached 45% of it's goal, $63,624 out of the
goal of $145,000. Dan Beard Family Campaign is at $12,000 of $15,000 goal,
which is really great compared to past years. Thanks to the Committee members
that helped David canvas the units at their meeting places.
New Business: Ed Williams - Council still needs help (youth and adults) for
Summer Camp staff. Lisa White asked for units to help in the Relay for Life
the last weekend of May. It can be a service project for Scouts involved in
the luminaria type project. They need Webelos and Scouts since it requires
the boys to light luminaria. Contact Lisa if your Scouts can help.
Committee Member of the Month: Larry Nessly for his work as Bearclaw SM and
Lisa White for her work on prospecting new units (and we don't want to forget
Holmes Merritt and Steve Merritt for their good job with Scouting for Food).
Executive Minute - David Page: The BSA will not waiver from it's standards
regardless of how the court cases turn out. He thanked us all for the work we
do in Scouting.
Meeting adjourned at 9:05 pm. Next meeting April 1, 1998 at 7:30 pm.
