Attendees: Stan Belyeu, Rhonda Chesson, Randy Ellis, Jenny Elwell, Roger Lear,
W.E. Medlin, Rodger Skirvin, John Slocumb, Steve Stewart,
Marvin Tharp, Judy Ward and Ron Werley (12)
1. Pledge and Invocation by Stan Belyeu.
2. April minutes approved.
3. District Commissioner - Ron Werley: Ron is meeting soon with a unit that
is having advancement problems. He is also visiting some other units to
recruit Unit Commissioners. Jenny Elwell has accepted the position as our
new Cub Roundtable Commissioner and she can use some help. Thanks, Jenny!
4. Boy Scout Program:
Advancement - Ed Williams: Ed was not there but sent information on Troop
advancement. So far in 2001 we have had 134 Scouts advance in rank. We
have 13 Eagles so far this year in that number.
Eagle Board - Rudy Hines: Rudy reported by e-mail that in April they had
4 projects and 3 finals, all approved. May, so far, has 10 projects and 8
finals scheduled.
Training - John Slocumb: Tri-District SMF had about 70 participants and
beautiful weather. The TTT course has a new name (Training Development
Conference) and a new syllabus. John is attending a planning meeting and
will report at the June meeting on the new course. It looks like the next
SMF course will be held on it's orginal date of September 7-9, 2001 and not
in early October. This will give Wood Badge trainees a chance to go to SMF.
High Adventure - Steve Stewart: Venturing Day 2001 was attended by 42
youth and 21 adults. They swam (in a very cold lake), did canoeing and
kayaking and rode mountain bikes around the camp.
Boy Scout Camporee - Roger Lear for Ed Walsh: There were about 500 Scouts
and 140 adults at the Camporee. 29 of our 37 Troops were in attendance.
The weather was beautiful and thanks to the units that ran the events that
Jim McGraw had set up, many of our Scouts learned how to use topo maps and
compasses. The OA "tapped out" more than 65 new OA members at the campfire
on Saturday night.
5. Cub Program:
Cub Day Camp - Rodger Skirvin for Linda Boggs: Cub Day Camp plans are
progressing well. The registration forms are on our Web Site.
Cub Training - Next Cub BLT will be hosted by Dan Beard on June 2, 2001 at
the Fuquay-Varina United Methodist Church.
Cub Advancement - Judy Ward: Judy reported that the council provided very
little advancement information as they are concentrating on entering the
unit charters.
2001 Cub Family Campout - Jenny Elwell: Jenny reported on the budget for
the Campout and provided a copy for the District archives to use next year.
2002 Cub Family Campout - Randy Ellis: Randy did a survey of units via
e-mail to find out if they wanted to use Camp McNeil again or Camp Durant
or Camp Reeves. The responses were almost totally in favor of using Camp
McNeil again due to the excellent facilities and the fact that neither of
our council camps have the necessary facilities nor the room for the event.
A motion was made and seconded and voted in to have the Cub Family Campout
at Camp McNeil. Randy will proceed with making the camp reservations.
6. Membership/Relationships - Marvin Tharp:
Roundup - Rhonda Chesson: Based on the survey they did Rhonda said that the
roundup will be similar to the one we did last year. The surveys went to
all the Cubmasters and the response was sparse. She is lining up the
locations for the roundup.
7. Finance - Rodger Skirvin: We are currently at $57,439 (82%) of our goal.
$27,249 came from the Family Campaign and $24,600 from the Leadership
Campaign.
Popcorn - Rodger Skirvin for Dusty Fletcher: The District Popcorn Kick-Off
for all of our units is TENATIVELY scheduled for September 4, 2001 at 7:30
pm at St. Francis UMC in Cary (the same place as it was held last year).
8. Activities and Civic Service - Roger Lear for Dusty Fletcher: Writeups
on our Mall Expo and Silver Beaver recipients were in the 4/26 Cary News.
Jane Paige has retired as the editor of the Cary News, so we will have to
work on developing a new contact at the Cary News.
9. Order of the Arrow - Steve Stewart for Bob Taylor: OA Spring Inductions
will be held on May 18-20.
