1. Pledge and Invocation by John Slocumb.
2. April minutes approved.
3. District Commissioner - Ron Werley: Ron has recruited 1 more new UC;
4 units (P213, P361, T323 and T391) have not rechartered yet. Pack 213 and
Pack 361 are dropped units. Six defective charters are being corrected.
ADC Roundtable Commissioner - Gary Thorn: Jenny Elwell will run the May
Roundtable. The May Roundtable will feature a 1 hour Fast Start Training
session for Cub leaders and Boy Scout leaders. The Fast Start will begin at
6:30 pm. Gary will put out a note on the e-mail list server to that effect.
The August Roundtable Kick-off meal can not be held at our normal location.
An alternative location is being investigated.
4. Boy Scout Program - Ed Walsh:
Advancement - Ed Williams: Ed reported that 7 Troops had advancement in
April.
Eagle Board of Review - Ed Williams for Tom Allen: 4 Eagles had their final
review and were approved in April. 7 projects were reviewed and 4 approved.
Training - Susan Long: Susan attended the Outdoor Leadership Skills course
in April and said that it was an outstanding course. Since the May 4 Boy
Scout Leader Specific training was cancelled by the Impeesa District, Susan
expects it to be re-scheduled to June 15th, if not, Dan Beard may host it.
Spring Camporee - Ron Werley: We had great camping weather and 29 units out
of 35 attended the camporee. There were 560 Scouts and 174 leaders that
registered and we had 30 to 40 visitors that helped with running the events.
The OA tapped out 137 new Ordeal members and we collected $258.73 for the
World Brotherhood of Scouting. The OA did not clean up the Saturday night
campfire area to the Ranger's satisfaction, so Ron took 35 minutes to clean
it up himself. Bill Fairhurst has agreed to be Camporee Chief in 2003.
5. Cub Program - Linda Boggs:
Training - Laura Wester: The May 4th Cub Specific Leader training has 40
participants registered so far. Laura plans for a maximum of 50.
Cub Day Camp - Linda Boggs: Barbara Barfield has dropped out as Director,
so Sheila Bullock has taken week #2 and Linda will be the Director for week
#1. They need a swimming pool as close to the Garner SBI site as they can
get, to pass the Scouts off on one of the swimming awards. If you know of
a pool in that area, contact Linda.
Cub Family Campout - Gary Thorn for Randy Ellis: They had 919 attend the
Family Campout at Camp McNeill and 21 out of 34 Packs attended. Robert
Spivey has agreed to be the Campout Chief for 2003 and Steve Fuller will be
the Campout Vice-Chief. The 2003 Campout will be held on either April 4-6
or March 21-23, 2003. Their campout committee will make the decision.
6. Finance - Rodger Skirvin: The Major Gift Campaign has collected $27,500.
The Community Campaign has about $3445 (Fuquay-Varina and Apex). Counting
the Family Campaign the FOS has collected about $73,461 of the $77,000 goal.
Family Campaign Chairman Ed Walsh: With only a few units left to visit,
the Family Campaign has collected $42,516 and hope to reach $43,000.
7. Camping - John Slocumb: John reported on the Summer Camp dates for the
Occoneechee Scout Reservation. Weeks 1, 2 and 4 are already filled. The
camp can handle 400 in one week and that includes the staff.
8. Membership/Relationships - Marv Tharp: Flyer distribution is to be next
week for the Spring Roundup. They still need more help in distribution.
On May 9th they are holding a dinner for possible sponsors for Scouting.
They have invited 80 churches and 34 so far have signed up to attend.
Total membership this month was 2323 versus 2964 last month. Most of the
units have re-chartered, and we have 86 units right now. We need to get
to a total membership of 3005 by next year to meet our membership goals.
9. Activities and Civic Service - No report.
10. New Business - District NESA group - W.E. Medlin: W.E., Susan Long and
Rodger are making headway in identifying Eagles in our district that will
be invited to join the District NESA group.
District Committee Members of the Month: Ron Werley, Jim McGraw and Bob Gamble
for the Boy Scout Camporee and Randy Ellis, Jenny Elwell and Gary Thorn for the
Cub Family Campout. When you draw more than 1690 Scouts and Scouters to two
camporees, you must be doing something right!
DISTRICT COMMITTEE MEMBERS PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING!:
Our next District Committee Meeting is scheduled for June 5, 2002 at 6:30 pm
at the home of W.E. and Becky Medlin near Fuquay-Varina. We will have a hot
dog and hamburg supper, compliments of W.E. and Becky. Committee members are
to bring a side dish (beans, chips, salads) or a dessert (cake, pie, cookies).
We will have our 6 month review, so Boy Scout and Cub Scout Committee leaders
should make sure their people are ready to discuss what we want to try to do
in the next 6 months of the district program.
