Attendees: Linda Boggs, Dusty Fletcher, Rudy Hines, Roger Lear, Bob
Ratledge, Steve Stewart, Rodger Skirvin, Marvin Tharp,
Gary Thorn, Judy Ward, Ron Werley, Lisa White, Ed Williams (13)
1. Pledge by Bob Ratledge, Invocation by Roger Lear.
2. August minutes approved as written.
3. District Commissioner - Charters are all in and will be passed out at
the September Round Table. 100% of our units registered on time and 69%
of the units were Quality Units. Ron has 14 active Unit Commissioners.
He is going to have Steve Stewart attend the Council Commissioner's RT
this month in his place. He has also sent some new updates to the
District Webpage and some News for the Webpage.
4. Boy Scout Program:
Advancement - Ed Williams: No Council advancement information available.
Ed has put a notice up on the Danbeard@listbot.com, notifying unit
leaders that Scouts attending the Eagle Board of Review will be refused
admittance unless they are dressed in a Class A uniform, with the
appropriate patches of rank and position, or dressed in appropriate
business type attire (suit, tie, etc.).
Eagle Board - Rudy Hines: August had 4 projects, 2 were approved,
1 rejected and 1 no-show. September so far has 5 projects and 5 finals
scheduled. Rudy would like to get some of the "old hands" from the
Eagle Boards of Review to help guide a large number of new volunteers
thru the process at some of the Review Boards. If you have served on
many Review Boards and are willing to guide some new volunteers in the
process, please contact Rudy (see web page for e-mail address).
Training - No Report.
Camping - No Report.
5. Cub Program - Linda Boggs:
Lisa White is leaving us in 2 weeks. The committee thanked her for her
tireless work with Cub Day Camp and the Cub Camporee and the many other
things she has done for our district. We hope she will enjoy her new
home in Texas.
Training - Gary Thorn for Pam Strug: There will be a Cub Scout Basic
Leader Training course held on October 14, 2000 from 8 AM to 2:30 PM at
the Cary First Baptist Church. There are only 2 Cub leaders signed up
so far. If you want to sign up, contact Pam Strug at 362-9949 or Gary
Thorn at 467-2996.
Advancement - Judy Ward: Judy reported on the Cub Advancement that she
has been able to gather so far up thru April of 2000. May had 11
Bobcats, 5 Wolves, 4 Bears and 13 Arrow of Lights. There are no figures
thru August available yet.
Cub Day Camp - Lisa White: Lisa has named Jewel Ward as a contact
point for any questions about the 2001 Cub Day Camp. Jewel's e-mail
address is wardjjbw@aol.com and her phone number is 387-7491. Lisa
has recruited Barbara Euspis for Cub Day Camp Director for one week and
Shiela Bullock and Linda Boggs as Co-Directors for the other week of Cub
Day Camp. Thanks to those folks for stepping in and taking over a
big responsibility for our district.
Cub Camporee - Linda Boggs for Jenny Elwell: The District Cub Family
Campout has been scheduled for May 18-20, 2001. If you have questions
or can help with the Cub Campout (Camporee) please contact Jenny at
772-6686.
6. Order of the Arrow - No Report.
7. Health & Safety - No Report.
8. Membership - Rodger Skirvin for Stan Belyeu: Join Scouting Night was
again a big success thanks to Stan and a lot of his volunteers. The
district units signed up about 270 Cubs and about 30 more have been
reported since then. We had in 1999, 1182 Cubs, 972 Scouts and 71
Venture Scouts. We now have 1463 Cubs, 974 Scouts and 71 Venture
Scouts. We need to pick up about 300 more Cubs, a few Scouts and 10
Venture Scouts by year end to meet our district goals. Thanks Stan!
We now have 36 Packs, 39 Troops and 8 Crews for a total of 83 units.
9. Activities and Civic Service - Dusty Fletcher: Our August 17 Round
Table Kickoff dinner had food prepared for 160 guests and only 67
showed up. Very discouraging to us, especially after Dusty had worked
very hard to get it all done, mostly by herself. The leftover food went
to the Raleigh Woman's center and fed 65 women & children 2 meals each.
We hope that the poor showing was not a result of us charging for the
meal!
The Uniform Sale is scheduled for September 9th, this Saturday, with
item drop off at the South Hills Mall Kiosk on 9/8 from 6 to 9 pm. If
you have any scouting uniforms or gear that you want to sell or donate,
PLEASE bring it to the Kiosk as we have very few items at present. The
sale will run from 8 am to noon on September 9th, Saturday at the South
Hills Mall Community Room.
A letter went out to all Scoutmasters, Cubmasters, Venture Leaders and
Unit Committee Chairmen asking for nominations for the adult leader
awards. They are due at the October 19th Round Table. We hope we
will get more than we have in the past! UNIT LEADERS PLEASE RESPOND!
10. Finance - Rodger Skirvin: We are stuck at $66,000 of our $70,000 goal.
If you want to make a donation (no joke), contact Rodger at 872-4884.
Popcorn Sale - Marvin Tharp: Marv reported that 49 units have signed
up to sell popcorn this year, more than we have ever had signed up
before. More than 40 units showed up at the September 5th District
Popcorn Kick-off meeting, again a record for the Kick-off. There are
about 12 units that have signed up for Show & Sell popcorn which will
be delivered to the units on September 22 or 23. The sale starts on
September 23 (not the 25th as originally planned) to give the Scouts
another weekend to sell the popcorn. GO UNITS!
11. New Business - Steve Stewart: Steve and Tom Stalker are going to start
a Round Table session for Venture leaders at the September 21st Round
Table. It is hoped there will be enough interest to continue it.
12. New Business - Bob Ratledge: Bob, thru a contact with Wellspring
Wholesale foods, got them to donate 5 $250 mountain bikes to our
Council. Mr. Dugger says they will be donated to Summer Camp.
13. New Business - Gary Thorn was presented with the Webelos Training
Award and Rodger Skirvin presented "Scout Law" ceramic mugs to Bob
Ratledge and Ron Werley for their work during the past scouting year.
14. New Business - Lisa White: Lisa reported that she will have the
contents of the Atlantic Ave. Dan Beard District storage unit at the
Morning Star unit inventoried and will send that report to the
Committee. Dan Beard District has an additional storage unit now,
thanks to Lisa, at Morning Star Mini-Storage on Chatham St. in Cary.
The Atlantic Ave. location, which was obtained by Ed Williams several
years ago, now contains Cub Day Camp shelters for the Tri-District.
Lisa guaranteed us that nothing will be thrown out until she has had
it inventoried and has sent the inventory to us for our action.
District Committee Member of the Month: Stan Belyeu, for the great
Join Scouting Night and Dusty Fletcher, for the really delicious August
Round Table Kick-off meal.
Next District Committee Meeting: October 4, 2000 at the First United
Methodist Library in Cary at 7:30 PM. UNIT LEADERS PLEASE NOTE: The
October meeting is our Annual Business Meeting and all Sponsor Coordinators
Reps are supposed to attend the meeting as voting members for the slate of
district officers for our next Scouting year!
