Attendees: Martin Banning, Herb Council, Tom Doligalski, Jenny Elwell,
Dusty Fletcher, Roger Lear, Susan Long, W.E. Medlin,
Rodger Skirvin, Steve Stewart, Marv Tharp, Ed Walsh, Ron Werley
and Ed Williams (13)
1. Pledge of Allegiance by Ron Werley, Invocation by Rodger Skirvin.
2. August minutes approved.
3. District Commissioner - Ron Werley: Crew 201 (Cary First Baptist Church)
has joined our district to boost us to 87 units. Ron would like all of the
District Committee members (current members and the ones who will be joining
the committee at the October Annual Business meeting next month) to bring
their checkbooks with them as he will be registering committee members for
the 2002-2003 Scouting year. You will be expected to fill out a new adult
volunteer leader form again this year and pay a $7 fee for single registrat-
ion. On January 1, 2003 the annual registration fee increases to $10/year.
Cub Roundtable Commissioner - Jenny Elwell: The September 19, 2002 Round-
table will have two training sessions available for our Scouters. At 6:30
pm (an hour prior to the actual Roundtable) we will hold a Cub Scout Fast
Start, a Boy Scout Fast Start and a Venture Fast Start training session, all
running from 6:30 to about 7:30. After the joint information session at
7:30, both the Cub and Boy Scouts will have a chance to get their aquatics
safety training (Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat) from Richard Connelly
who is the recognized "expert" in aquatics in our council.
4. Boy Scout Program - Ed Walsh:
Ed reported that Roger Lear trained 45 people at the August Roundtable Kick-
off. They received their 2 year Health and Safety Certification.
Advancement - Ed Williams: Ed reported that there was advancement in August,
but that he had not had the chance to get the figures together. Week 5 at
Summer Camp had only 50 Scouts in attendance.
Eagle Board of Review - No Report.
Training - Susan Long: Their will be a Den Chief Training course held in
Fayetteville on September 14. Call the Scout Office (872-4884) for more
information. Also on September 14th, there will be a New Leader Essentials
and Cub Scout Leader Specific Training course held in Angier, NC from
8 am until noon.
5. Cub Program - No reports.
6. Finance - Ed Walsh: Ed, Steve Glass and Rodger Skirvin are working at
getting the Finance Campaign for 2003 started. The Scout Office made a
mailing to registered Scouters in August explaining that the Triangle United
Way was not going to support Scouting starting on July 1, 2003 and that any
designated gifts to Scouting would be reduced by 11%, as that is what the
Triangle United Way charges for processing the paperwork. Scouters have
responded by donating more than $5,000 since that letter went out.
Popcorn - Dusty Fletcher: We have 48 units out of 55 signed up to sell
popcorn. The District Unit Kernel Kick-off was held on Sept. 3, 2002 and
Unit Kernels from 39 units showed up to get training. Dusty would like for
the District Committee to help unload and sort the popcorn when it is
delivered to the Longistics, Inc. warehouse on November 8th, from 8 am to
9 pm. Call Dusty if you can help.
7. Order of the Arrow - Tom Doligalski: Brotherhood training will be done at
the September 19 Roundtable, starting at about 6:30 pm. Those receiving
their Brotherhood would then go to the Sept. 20-22 Fall Fellowship to finish
up the "service" part of the Brotherhood training.
8. District LDS Liaison - Herb Council: Herb said that they had about 40 Cub
Scout leaders that need NLE and CSLST. He will contact Laura Wester to
see what they can work out for a training session.
9. Membership/Relationships - Marv Tharp: The Fall Roundup gathered about 200
new Cub Scouts for our units. Our thanks to Rhonda Chesson, Marv and all
those who helped at the Roundup. We need about 300 more Cubs to make quota.
We have 1431 Cubs, 1104 Boy Scouts and Varsity Scouts and 110 Venture Scouts
for a total District enrollment of 2645 Scouts. We have 34 packs, 38 Troops
and Teams and 15 Venture Crews, for a total of 87 units.
10. Activities and Civic Service - Dusty Fletcher: Dusty reported that we had
102 people eat at the August Roundtable Kick-off. Our Scout Uniform sale
flyer is on our district web site for the Sept. 7th sale. If you can help
us (we need you to help) with used Scouting clothing or equipment, contact
Dick & Dusty Fletcher or Roger Lear.
The 2003 Recognition Event is coming up on November 21, 2002. Nomination
forms for the Award of Merit and the Distinguished Leadership Citation are
available on our district web site (see the Site Map and the Awards section
under Activities and Civic Service). Remember to nominate those in your
unit that have served you for two years or more!
11. Venture Scouting - Steve Stewart: Venturing Vortex will be held at Camp
Durant on October 4-6. This is the chance for Scouts in regular Scouting
units to experience some of the high adventure activities that Venturing
provides to Scouts.
On October 12, 2002 a New Leader Essentials and Venture Leader Specific
Training will be held at Optimist Farm, from 9 am to 1 pm. Steve invites
those attending the training session to stay for their Crew's "Fashion
Show", which will be held that evening.
12. New Business - The Committee decided that we should insure that (at our
January 2003 planning retreat), we make plans for a 2003 event for both
Cubs and Scouts, which will replace the now defunct Mall Expo.
13. New Business - Committee Members should start putting together the data
for our Annual Business Report, which should be presented at the October
Annual Business Meeting. Please contact Roger Lear (learbsa@utinet.net)
if you have any items you would like reflected in the Business Report.
District Committee Members of the Month: Rhonda Chesson, for her work on the
Fall Roundup and Dusty and Dick Fletcher for their work on the Roundtable
Kick-off Meal and the Popcorn Kick-off Meeting.
NOTE TO CHARTERED PARTNER REPRESENTATIVES: As voting members of the District
you are expected to attend the October Annual Business Meeting on October 2,
2002, at which the Committee votes on the recommendations of the Nominating
Committee for the District Officers for the 2002-2003 Scouting year.
