NOTES AND EXPLANATIONS:
Weights shown in most cases are the amounts reported by the collecting units.
Scouting for Food was done in mid-November from 1988 through 1993, and was changed to Scouting Week (1st week of February) starting in 1994. In 1999 the Occoneechee Council stopped promoting Scouting For Food. In 2004 the Occoneechee Council started promoting Scouting for Food in April. Some of our Crosswinds units still collect in February, some in April and some at other times of the year.
In September of 2007, at the suggestion of Dusty Fletcher of the Hemlock District, the Crosswinds District started setting up a schedule on which Scouting For Food would be collected by units on a year round basis. The receivers of the Scouting For Food donations preferred to have the food come in all during the year, thereby eliminating the "feast or famine" of Scouting food that they faced in the past. We have hopes that this will become the standard for not only Crosswinds and Hemlock, but other Districts in the Occoneechee Council.
Chris and Kristin Meyer of Troop 216 became our Scouting For Food Co-Chairpersons in September of 2007 and challenged our units to at least double the amount of food they collected in 2006, which meant the units would have to collect at least 15,154 pounds of food. THEY COLLECTED A TOTAL OF 18,258 pounds - OVER 9 TONS of food.
Our District really needs to have at least 4 of our units doing Scouting For Food during each month of the year for this method to get all of the units involved. It would also mean that we would collect and distribute alot more food each year. Please get your units to help us!
So our reports of Scouting For Food collections starting in September of
2007, shown above, will now show the collections of food from September of
one year thru August of the following year.
