BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
OCCONEECHEE COUNCIL
CROSSWINDS DISTRICT
Robert Spivey Susan Long Martin Banning
District Chairman District Commissioner District Executive
Attendees: Martin Banning, Keith Biegert, Beckie Dayton, Bob Gamble,
Jerry Jester, Roger Lear, Lu Little, Susan Long, Jim McGraw,
Suzie Slopek, Robbie Spivey, Gary Thorn and Ed Walsh (13).
1. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Robbie Spivey. Lu Little was introduced
as our newest Committee member as Cub Scout Training Chairlady.
2. The Crosswinds District Committee meeting minutes for December 2005 were
approved as written.
3. Spring Camporee - Jim McGraw, Program Chairman: Jim emphasized that he needs
help with getting the Nature program ready for the Camporee. That
information was put out on our e-mail list server and on our website.
4. Commissioner Service - Susan Long; Jerry Jester has agreed to be Susan's
ADC. Jerry and Suzie Slopek helped Susan train some new UC's during the
holidays. Susan wanted to make sure our Committee members try to attend the
District Committee Workshop on Jan. 28 at 8:30am at Benson Memorial Church
in Raleigh on Creedmore Road, which is about 3 hours long with a free lunch.
Long range strategic planning will be held from 1-4pm. If you are going to
go contact Linda Grady (lgrady@bsamail.org) to let her know you'll be there.
Susan also announced that the Silver Beaver dinner will be on February 25th
and that two of our Scouters will receive the award. They are Bob Gamble
and Frank Jackson.
Charters have gone out to all but 6 of our units. On-line rechartering will
be presented at our January and February RoundTables during an extended time
at the joint information session. ALL UNITS should try to have the person
that does their rechartering at those two RoundTables.
Round Table ADC - Gary Thorn: We are going to start serving hot dogs and
hamburgers at the beginning of every Round Table. We hope this will make it
more possible for people to attend and have their supper first. This will
be done on a trial basis to see if Scouters like to have supper at RT.
Boy Scout RT Comm. - Jerry Jester: January RT BS program will probably be
more planning and practice sessions for the theme/games for Spring Camporee.
5. Membership/Relationships - Martin Banning: Doug Mall has agreed to be our
District Webelos to Boy Scout Bridging representative. Chris Thompson will
be our Activities & Civic Service, Cindy Smith will do Scouting for Food in
April (on the Council's schedule) and David Kellerman has agreed to do the
2006 Pinewood Derby (his second time) on March 4, 2006 at Cary Towne Center.
Thanks to all of you for helping!
We have 1039 Cub Scouts, 830 Boy Scouts and 29 Venture Scouts. We are below
last year's figures, except in Boy Scouts, so we are down 64 Scouts and 8
units, which means that we will not be a Quality District for 2005.
6. Finance - Martin Banning: The 2006 FOS Campaign kickoff breakfast is
planned for March 14th. Martin said that so far, 93% of the 2005 FOS
donations have been collected (and they have hopes it will go higher).
Popcorn - Beckie Dayton: Beckie reported that everything is winding down
for our 2005 Popcorn sale. Beckie has agreed to be our District Kernel for
2006 to try to better last year's sale, in which we were the highest popcorn
seller in the Council at $289,254. Thanks Beckie for doing it again!
7. Cub Family Campout - Beckie Dayton and Rudy Rowell: Beckie and Rudy are
trying to put together a plan for the April 21-23, 2006 Campout. If you
would like to help plan the Campout please contact Beckie or Rudy.
8. Boy Scout Program - Ed Walsh:
Eagle Board of Review - Tom Allen(via e-mail): The December EBOR approved 5
Eagle Ranks and at a special board held later in December approved another
Eagle for a total of 6 Eagles for December. Eagle Projects for December
were 3 approved, 1 suspended and 2 rejected.
2006 BS Spring Camporee - Ed Walsh: Ed is going to be the Camporee Chief
for the Camporee. They have finalized the budget based on an attendance of
550. They may need another shelter in activity field #2. Parking will be
in the campsites or infield #3. Since the theme is "Nature", 1st and 2nd
year Webelos Leaders may be interested in coming to the camporee. Ed noted
that as in past years, they will need units to volunteer Scouters to help
with the camporee activities and to lead the games.
9. Training - Suzie Slopek: Rudy Rowell is putting together a New Leader
Essentials course and a Cub leader basic course on January 21, 2006 to be
held at a Morrisville chruch (flyer on the Council website Training page).
On February 9, 2006 there will be a Troop Committee Challange course
presented at Troop 208's Lutheran Church in Cary. (Flyer is forthcoming on
the Council website Training page).
On February 11, 2006 there will be a NLE course at Cary's First Baptist
Church which Will Highsmith is running. (Flyer is forthcoming on the Council
website Training page).
10. NOTE TO DISTRICT COMMITTEE MEMBERS: We will hold our annual program
planning session on February 11, 2006 at Cary First Baptist Church at Annex
3 (our normal meeting place) from 8am to 1pm (end time is an estimate).
Breakfast will be provided at the start of the meeting.
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT ALL DISTRICT COMMITTEE MEMBERS ATTEND.
PLEASE DO YOUR HOMEWORK FOR THIS PLANNING MEETING AND AT LEAST WRITE DOWN
THE THINGS YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO THAT FALL IN YOUR AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY!!
We wouldn't like to put down our own ideas and plans for your area if you
are not there, but WE WILL (if you have not submitted your goals to us), as
we need to know your plan and how it fits into our program for 2006/7.
IF YOU ABSOLUTELY CAN"T MAKE THE MEETING, please send your program goals
list to Roger Lear (learbsa@bigfoot.com) by Feb. 10, so they can be read
and discussed at the meeting.
11. COMMITTEE MEMBERS PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING CANCELLATION:
There will be NO DISTRICT COMMITTEE MEETING ON FEBRUARY 2, 2006. This is
because we are having the District Committee Planning meeting on Feb. 11th.
We will probably have an abbreviated February Committee Meeting at the
beginning of the program planning session.
12. Scouting's 96th Birthday is on February 8, 2006. Scout Sunday is on
February 5, 2006 (with Methodists celebrating it on February 12, 2006).
Please remember to get your unit involved in your church's program for that
Sunday. If you don't do that, at least show up as a group in uniform.
District Committee Members should remember to wear their Scout uniforms to
church on that Sunday.
PS - Don't forget the Council Eagle Recognition Banquet on January 28, 2006.
You need reservations for that Banquet. Contact the Council Office.
13. Congratulations are in order for our DE, Martin Banning, who has been
promoted to a District Director level for our Council. Don't worry, he
will still be our DE! Congratulations Martin, from all of us in Crosswinds
District!
