BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
OCCONEECHEE COUNCIL
CROSSWINDS DISTRICT
Robert Spivey Jerry Jester Martin Banning
District Chairman District Commissioner District Director
Attendees: Martin Banning, Bob Gamble, Will Highsmith, Jerry Jester,
Roger Lear, Lu Little, Bill Reynolds, Maryanne Scheilli,
Suzie Slopek, Chris Thomson, Gary Thorn and Ed Walsh (12)
1. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jerry Jester.
2. The minutes for November 2007 were approved as written. There were no
minutes for December 2007, as we had a Christmas Party at Bob Gamble's home.
3. Commissioner - Jerry Jester: Unit inventories were finished on time. We
appear to have 43 Quality Units (out of 54 total units), which is really
good. Jerry says some more may come in as QU's once he has talked to them.
4. Training - Will Highsmith: Cub Scout training will be presented by
Crosswinds District on Jan. 12th at Cary 1st Baptist, 3rd floor, 9am - 2pm.
The January IOLS was cancelled. Keep watching the training flyers as they
become available on the Council Website.
5. Membership/Relationships - Bill Reynolds: Our District met the goals for
receiving our Quality District Award, thanks to Jerry Jester and Apex's
First Baptist Church for the Pack that they formed. We have 988 Cub Scouts,
+2 over 2007, 971 Boy Scouts, +51 over 2007 and 49 Venture Scouts, +12 over
2007, Total Scouts is 2008 (+65 over 2007). Those 2008 Scouts in our
District makes us the biggest District in the Occoneechee Council.
We have a total of 54 units (+2 over 2007) for a total of 23 Packs, 23
Troops and 8 Venture Crews and an overall growth of 3.3%. Great work to all
who made it happen!
A membership meeting at the Scout Office on January 10th at 6:30pm (with
food) will toss around new ideas on how to increase membership. Bill
invites anyone from our District to show up if you have any membership
ideas.
6. Finance - Martin Banning: There have been 3 FOS presentations given to
units and $7.7K collected thanks to Jerry Jester and Martin. Martin is
working on an idea for Community Campaign that sounds very much like a
winning idea. They are still looking for a District Major Gifts Chairman.
The FOS Breakfast at Prestonwood will feature Gen. Hugh Shelton as the
guest speaker. Give the BSA $250 and you will get an invitation to the
breakfast in March.
7. Activities & Civic Service - Chris Thomson: Several units have signed up
to do Scouting for Food with Kristen and Chris Meyer, who are the contacts
to talk to about setting a date for your unit to do SFF. We are planning
on posting this data to our web site so that all our units can see it.
Bruce Wilcox, out 2008 Pinewood Derby Chairman, has released the Derby
Rules and Information packet and the information has been added to our
web site and sent out on the District E-mail list server. Packs must be
registered by 2/23/08 in order for their Cubs to be able to participate in
the race and each unit must name 2 people that will be able to help with the
Derby races at Cary Town Center center court on Saturday, March 1, 2008.
8. Boy Scout Camporee - Ed Walsh: The January Round Table is important to your
unit if you plan on attending the Boy Scout Camporee at Camp Reeves in
April. It is going to be an "eatoree" and units have to make commitments
for food, etc., at the January RT.
9. Eagle Board of Review - Gantt Edmiston (via e-mail): The November EBOR
approved 6 Eagle Ranks and 5 projects and 3 projects were suspended. The
December EBOR approved 2 Eagle Ranks and 3 projects. We ended up with 59
Eagles in 2007, which was 4 less than we had in 2006 (63). We now have a
total of 222 Crosswinds District Eagle Scouts since Crosswinds was formed.
10. Crosswinds District Web Site - Roger Lear: Thanks to Troop 216 for paying
the $100.00 yearly fee for our new Web Site Hosting service by RTPnet.org
and thanks to Gantt Edmiston, who already uses RTPnet.org for Troop 200,
for setting up the web host site and moving all of our data and fixing some
problems that cropped up after the switchover to RTPnet.org. Thanks to
Chris Caswell and the NC Research and Education Network for hosting our web
site for the past 4 years and for allowing us to keep our old domain name
so that our host move was transparent to our Scouts and Scouters.
NOTE TO THE ENTIRE CROSSWINDS DISTRICT COMMITTEE:
There will NOT be a District Committee Meeting on Thursday, February 7,
2008, as we are going to have our annual District Goals setting meeting on
Saturday, February 9, 2008. It will start at about 8am and last until 2 or
3pm. Martin said that breakfast and lunch will be provided. A place to
hold the meeting has yet to be determined. All District Chairpeople and
District Committee members should start writing down the goals for your
area for this year. All members should also examine the 2008 and 2009
calendars for entries that may be missing.
