Attendees: Martin Banning, Keith Biegert, Bob Crowley, Tom Doligalski,
Bill Fairhurst, Jerry Jester, Roger Lear, Susan Long, Beckie Nalley,
Bill Reynolds, Suzie Slopek, Robbie Spivey and Ed Walsh (13).
1. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Robbie Spivey. Robbie introduced our
guest, Bill Reynolds, an Eagle Scout, who has just joined our District.
2. Crosswinds District minutes for February 2005 were approved as written.
3. Membership/Relationships - Suzie Slopek: Total membership in our District
is about 1976 Scouts. Martin has info on about 10 units to be started this
year to replace the 5 Teams and 3 or 4 Crews sponsored by the LDS Church
which we'll lose this year along with Pack 313.
4. Religious Emblems - Chris Siegl & Robbie Spivey: Scout Sunday participation
banners will be given out at the next RoundTable to those units who have not
gotten their banners yet.
5. Commissioner Service - Susan Long: Charter turn-in will be March 15 and
March 17 (at RoundTable). She has yet to hear from 8 Packs, 3 Troops and 4
Crews. Commissioner Staff has a goal of reviewing all charters before they
are submitted to the Council. John Slocumb, Chris Siegl and the Troop 208
Committee are working on getting Pack 208 going. That unit will lapse, but
not drop.
6. Finance - Martin Banning: Our 2005 FOS Family Campaign has reached $61,000
of our $99,000 goal according to Jerry Jester, our Family Campaign Chairman.
It costs our Council about $120 per year to support each Scout. The
Community Campaign Breakfast will be on March 11 at Prestonwoods. The Major
Gifts Campaign has had about $22,000 committed to our District so far.
Popcorn - Beckie Nalley: Beckie is just getting started on the 2005
District Popcorn sale. She will need all of us to help her succeed in
bettering last year's sale figure.
7. Activities and Civic Service - Open position:
Scouting for Food 2005 - Cindy Smith: Cindy reported by e-mail that our
units collected about 6,663 (3 tons+) of food and delivered it to the NC
Food Bank and 3 or 4 of our local food closets. Thanks to all of the people
who helped with the food drive. More reports may come in later.
8. Cub Scout Program - Open position:
Cub Family Campout - Chris Siegl: Chris reported via e-mail that the Cub
Family Campout area was surveyed, problems identified and thru the help of
the OA and some of our Troops there will be a campsite cleanup on March 12.
Patch design is completed and T-shirt design is in process. Beckie Nalley
helped with getting about 50% of the staffing and medical coverage in place.
Rocket kits have been selected and they are in the process of buying them.
Cub Day Camp - Martin Banning reporting: The plans for a Wake County area
Cub Day Camp continue to progress. Ken Truelove will be at our next
RoundTable to present the current status of our part in Cub Day Camp.
Cub Scout Pinewood Derby - Martin Banning reporting for David Kellerman:
This year's Pinewood Derby will be held on March 5 at the Cary Towne Center.
A patch is presently being designed. If you can help on March 5, please
contact Martin or David Kellerman.
9. Boy Scout Program - Ed Walsh:
Boy Scout Advancement - Tom Doligalski: Tom reported that starting this
year National has the goal of re-writing 1/3 of the Merit Badge pamphlets
each year. Scouts starting on a Merit Badge after January 1, 2005 need to
make sure they use the latest MB book. The Council has to sell out all of
the old MB pamphlets before they can order new ones, so the Scout should
make sure they get a new pamphlet if the requirements have changed in 2005.
Eagle Board of Review - Tom Doligalski for Tom Allen: The February EBOR
approved 2 Eagle Ranks and 5 projects. They need 18 adults for the March
Board of Review as it will be reviewing the largest number of finals and
projects that our District has had since we started in January of 2004.
Boy Scout Camporee - Jerry Jester: More than 460 Scouts and Scouters have
pre-registered for the 2005 Camporee.
10. Order of the Arrow - Tom Doligalski: The OA is going to try to do a March
12 campsite cleanup for the Cub Family Campout. The RoundTable on March 17
will review all Brotherhood Candidates if they show up at the RoundTable.
11. Venturing - Bill Fairhurst: About 350 Scouts are pre-registered for the
Venturing Vortex. He still needs more volunteers for Shooting Sports.
12. Training - Suzie Slopek: The Wake County Service Area Training Team have
proposed a schedule for training courses for the next 3 years. William
Highsmith has taken the job of our District Boy Scout Training Chairman.
13. 2005 Council Camporee - Martin Banning: Martin is the director for the
2005 Council Camporee. It is planned to be held at the NC Highway Patrol
Training area. The October date has not been set yet. Martin would like
for our Crosswinds District to be a major part of the Council Camporee.
14. District Organization - Robbie Spivey: Robbie led a discussion about how
effective or defective our District Organization is at present. Robbie
wants to have some discussions on whether or not there is a better way to
format the District and it's reporting structures. More discussion will
take place in the coming months.
15. 2006 Crosswinds Scout-O-Rama - Robbie Spivey: Robbie and the town of Cary
have set the dates of March 31, 2006 - April 2, 2006 for our first
Scout-O-Raman in many years. The site will be Cary's Bond Park and Cary's
Mayor Ernie McAllister would like to make it an annual event. Units should
put the dates on their calendars for next year and be prepared to help us
make it a success.
Committee Member of the Month: Martin Banning for his constant work to hold
our Committee together and do think-ahead planning for our active schedule.
