BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
OCCONEECHEE COUNCIL
CROSSWINDS DISTRICT
Robert Spivey Jerry Jester Martin Banning
District Chairman District Commissioner District Director
Attendees: Martin Banning, Bob Gamble, Will Highsmith, Monte McCaw,
Jerry Jester, Roger Lear, Lu Little, Suzie Slopek, Gary Thorn,
Chris Thomson, Bryson Trexler and Ed Walsh (12)
1. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Roger Lear.
2. The minutes for March 2007 were approved as written.
3. Membership/Relationships - M. Banning for Bill Reynolds: Our current
membership is 1182 Cubs, 984 Boy Scouts, 40 Venture Scouts and 56 Explorer
Scouts for a total of 2207 in 69 units.
4. Training - William Highsmith: We will have a NLE, Cub Scout specific and
Venture Leaders specific on May 5. Will needs 6 or 7 more trainers
(especially Cub Scout and Venture trainers) for the course. If you can help
contact Will. There is still some room in the upcoming Powderhorn Course.
5. 2007 BS Spring Camporee - Bob Gamble: Everything is a go for the Camporee.
There are 112 adults and 443 Scouts from 17 units signed up.
6. Finance - Martin Banning: Our Major Gifts is at $51K (goal is $52K).
7. Commissioner Service - Jerry Jester: UC's have been asked to serve at the
Spring Camporee if they can. They have also been asked to help at Cary
Spring Daze and the District Cub-O-Ree. 100% of the Committee voted to keep
this year's Cub-O-Ree as a one day event, with no overnight camping. This
is due the costs involved, liabilities and the lack of unit leadership.
Round Table ADC - Gary Thorn: Gary reported that the June Round Table will
be held at Cary First Baptist Church dining hall (where we had it in March).
We are looking for someone to be District Cub RT chairperson and some Cub
unit leaders to help that person with the Cub RT programs.
8. Eagle Board of Review - Gantt Edmiston (via e-mail): The March EBOR
approved 2 Eagle Ranks and 4 projects (1 project was rejected).
9. 2007 JOTA - Chris Thomson: Chris asked if the District wanted to hold a
JOTA event on Saturday, October 20,2007. It is the 50th Anniversary of JOTA
and we had a good turnout at the 2006 JOTA when we had 4 stations set up and
worked with the Scouts on 50 Radio MB's. They could set up 1 station per
band as the time problem comes in making radio contacts. Ed Walsh will
check out the availability of the St. Andrew's parking lot for the JOTA.
10. 2007 Uniform Sale - Chris Thomson and Martin Banning: There will be a Wake
County Uniform Sale at the Council Scout Office on September 15, 2007.
Units will be in charge of their own uniform sales at the event.
11. Scouting for Food - Roger Lear: Hemlock District has come up with a method
of doing Scouting for Food year round. Roger asked the Committee if they
wanted to try the same thing. The Committee suggested we bring it up at
the April RT and ask if the units thought it was a good idea and if so,
would someone step forward to head up the scheduling of the food gathering.
Committee Member of the Month: Jerry Jester and Bob Taylor for receiving their
Silver Beaver Awards and their continued efforts in Scouting.
