BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
OCCONEECHEE COUNCIL
CROSSWINDS DISTRICT
Jonathan Taylor Jerry Jester Martin Banning
District Chairman District Commissioner District Director
Attendees: Keith Biegert, Will Highsmith, Jerry Jester, Roger Lear,
Monte McCaw, Bill Reynolds and Jonathan Taylor (7)
1. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Roger Lear.
2. The minutes for April 2008 were approved as written.
3. Training - Will Highsmith: The IOLS course graduated about 45 students. Ed
Walsh and his staff are to be commended for showing Scouters how the course
goes on even with bad weather.
Will reminded everyone about the May 31 Boy Scout Leader Specific course
at Cary 1st Baptist along with the first aid and CPR and AED course.
Gantt Edmisten is going to do a course on Merit Badge Counseling at 1st
United Methodist Church in Cary on June 7, 2008 from 8:30am until about
10:30am and the cost is $5.00.
4. Finance - Jerry Jester: We are still about $15K short on our FOS goal but
hopefully we will meet the goal by the end of June.
Popcorn - Jerry Jester: Prices are going up on some items this year. The
prizes are going to come from Trail's End due to the poor quality of last
years prizes.
5. Membership/Relationships - Bill Reynolds: May 29 is the Wake County Spring
Roundup kickoff. Every Pack in our District needs to send 1 person to the
Forest Hills Baptist Church to represent their pack.
6. Boy Scout Camporee - Ed Walsh: We had about 500 show up at the Camporee
which was 150 shy of what the Units pre-registered. We met the budget but
only because we had the $15 per Scout registration fee. It was a good
Camporee and the weather cooperated with us and the Scouts had a lot of fun.
Our DD, Martin Banning, was a Marine but he proved to us that he was not to
good a marksman, because he tried the slingshots at our Quail Hunt and he
couldn't hit anything. Martin, Jerry Jester said we had to put this in the
minutes for the record.
Monte McCaw thought the tap out ceremony was outstanding and he wanted to
thank the District for all the help they got with the OA drink sales and the
donation of all the tools we used at the Camporee, which they will sell. He
felt, like some of the others at the meeting, that the skits at the campfire
were not well lighted and that you could not hear what the Scouts were
saying. All of us are looking at a way to remedy that problem at the next
Camporee.
7. Eagle Board of Review - Gantt Edmiston (via e-mail): The April Crosswinds
EBOR approved 6 Eagle Ranks and 8 projects.
8. District Commissioner - Jerry Jester: Jerry said that alot of the Unit
Commissioners were at the Camporee helping out. He wanted to thank them
for their effort and for spending the gas money to drive to the Camporee
He also said that the Commissioner staff will start the unit inventories at
the May Roundtable.
9. District Cub-O-Ree - Rudy Rowell and Bill Daunch: The Cub-O-Ree had 5 Packs
and about 100 Cubs and Scouters in attendance. Rudy and Bill want to thank
all the Scouters that helped staff and run the 12 activites they had.
Committee Members of the Month: Ed Walsh, Jim McGraw, Robin Biegert, Bob
Gamble, Neal Keeter and Matt Breneman for all their work on the great 2008 Boy
Scout Camporee and Rudy Rowell and Bill Daunch for all their work on making
the 2008 Pirates of the Cub-Rean Cub-O-Ree a rip roaring sucess.
