BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
OCCONEECHEE COUNCIL
CROSSWINDS DISTRICT
Robert Spivey Susan Long Martin Banning
District Chairman District Commissioner District Executive
Attendees: Martin Banning, Beckie Dayton, Bob Gamble, William Highsmith,
Jerry Jester, Roger Lear, Lu Little, Jim McGraw and Chris Thomson
(9).
1. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Martin Banning. Martin gave us an
update on his back condition. He is scheduled for more back surgery on
August 22 and will be out of work until mid-October. Jason Wimmer will be
filling in for him during that time.
2. The June 2006 minutes were approved as written.
3. Commissioner Service - Jerry Jester for Susan Long: Recharter info has been
collected and updated. The August RT will be our annual RT kick-off with
hot dogs and hamburgs and the Commissioners will provide the drinks and
desserts. Then there will be orientation for the fall Roundup and the Boy
Scout program will be a Health and Safety Certification presentation.
Jerry and Martin are visiting our units church sponsors to help them and us
understand what it means for a church to sponsor a Scout unit.
4. Membership - Martin Banning for Bill Reynolds: Gearing up for the fall
Roundup is key this year as we can no longer get into the schools to
recruit new Scouts. We used to get 90% of our new Scouts from school
recruiting, so now we are looking for other places to recruit, like our
sponsoring church organizations. Our Fall Roundup will again take place at
Bond Park in their Dogwood Conference Room in the Community Center on
September 12 and September 14, from 7 to 9 pm.
Cary First Baptist Church has agreed to let us have a small area in front of
the church for a Cary Lazy Days Scout display.
We currently have 52 units, 24 Packs. 22 Troops, 4 Venture groups and 2
Explorer Posts. We have 1723 Scouts, 786 Cubs, 892 Boy Scouts, 17
Venturers and 28 Explorers. We have met the unit numbers for Quality
District.
5. Camporee - Bob Gamble: They are verifying our dates and location and will
soon start Camporee Committee meetings.
6. Camping - Bob Gamble: The white water event info will be sent out via
e-mail by Bob in the near future.
7. Training - William Highsmith has taken Suzie Slopek's job as our District
Training Chair. He will be looking for someone to take his job as Boy Scout
Training Chairman. If you would like to do that job, contact William.
8. Finance - Martin Banning; Martin reported that we have pledges for $133,425
which is 106% of our goal. $50,000 from Major Gifts, $3225 from the
Community Campaign and $80,200 from our Family Campaign. Thank you ALL!
9. 2006 Popcorn Sale - Beckie Dayton; Beckie reported that our District dates
are set. They can be seen on our website under Finance and Popcorn. We are
looking for a warehouse to do the popcorn sorting and delivery as we cannot
use Longistics this year.
10. Advancement - Tom Allen and Gantt Edmiston (via-e-mail); There were 8
Eagle Ranks approved and 7 Eagle projects approved on June 14 and there
were 4 Eagle Ranks and 1 Eagle project approved on July 12.
