Crosswinds District Committee Meeting Minutes
Attendees: Martin Banning, Tom Doligalski, Bob Gamble, Brian Garrett,
Jerry Jester, Kevin John, Roger Lear, Susan Long, Jim McGraw,
Kevin Mote, Chris Siegl, Suzie Slopek, Robbie Spivey, D. Sturdivant,
Gary Thorn and Ron Werley (16)
1. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Robbie Spivey. Robbie introduced our
guests, Kevin Mote and D. Sturdivant.
2. Crosswinds District minutes for August 2004 were approved as written.
3. Membership/Relationships - Martin Banning: Cub Roundup gathered 226 new Cubs
plus some that have not been reported yet from the unit open houses.
Thanks to all the Scouters who made the Roundup be a success!
To make Quality District this year we must have an increase in every
category of Scouting, by at least one member.
4. Religious Awards - Chris Siegl and Robbie Spivey: There will be a Catholic
counselors training session at St. Andrew on September 11.
5. Commissioner's Report - Susan Long: We are having some real problems in
trying to get adult leadership for some of our Cub Packs. Units are busy
getting ready for the new Scouting year.
The November 18 RT will be replaced with our 1st Annual Crosswinds District
Scouter Recognition and Awards Event. Susan Long has agreed to chair the
Awards Committee. Serving with her will be Suzie Slopek and Ron Werley.
They will decide how we are to proceed from here and report on October 7th.
The forms nominating a Scouter for an award must be submitted to Susan no
later than the evening of the October 21st RT.
If you have someone to nominate, start gathering the nomination information
now (awards earned, years in Scouts and as an adult leader, etc.). The
nomination forms are on our web site under Activities and Civic Service.
Roundtable ADC - Gary Thorn: There were 27 Scouters trained in Health and
Safety at the August Roundtable Kick-Off. Our thanks to Martin Banning and
the Occoneechee Council for providing the food and the funding and help in
making the event a success.
Boy Scout Roundtable - Jerry Jester: At the August RT we had 54 Scouters in
attendance. We had 28 Cub leaders from 16 different Packs, 25 Scout leaders
from 15 different Troops and 1 Venture leader from one Crew. Let's keep up
that great attendance for the coming year! Thanks, Scouters!
Cub Scout Roundtable - Rudy Rowell: No report.
6. Finance - Martin Banning: Karl Blackley has agreed to be our FOS Steering
Committee Chairman. We need Steering Committee members. If you know of
someone who would be willing to serve contact Martin with their name.
Popcorn - Suzie Slopek: The August 17th Popcorn Kickoff had 21 units
represented. 28 unit leaders and 4 District Popcorn Staff ran the meeting.
So far. Show-N-Sell (and Show-N-Deliver) orders are up 50% over last year.
7. Activities & Civic Service - Open Position - No report.
8. Cub Scout Program - Still an open position.
Advancement - Pam Sen: Reported via e-mail that 13 Cub Scouts have earned
advancement since August, for a total of 859 advancements in 2004 so far.
Cub Day Camp - Martin Banning: Cub Day Camp had a total of 525 Cubs in
attendance for all 3 weeks for the 5 Wake County Districts.
Cub Family Campout for 2005 - Chris Siegl: Chris reported that the Cub
Family Campout will be held in conjunction with the Boy Scout Spring
Camporee on April 8-10, 2005. The theme will be Cub Space Adventures.
Council Cub Pow-Wow - Gary Thorn: Gary is the registrar and he said the
Pow-Wow will be held in Sanford, NC at the St. Lukes UMC on November 13,
2004. Our calendar has been corrected to show November 13.
9. Boy Scout Program:
Advancement - Tom Doligalski: Tom reported that advancement reports for the
first 6 months show a serious concern for at least 5 Troops with no
advancements.
Eagle Board of Review - Tom Doligalski for Tom Allen: There were 7 final
Eagle reviews in August, all approved. Two projects were reviewed, with
1 approved and 1 rejected.
2005 Camporee - Jerry Jester: The 2005 Camporee Staff is working on the
Camporee plans. The theme will probably be "Land Navigation". If you are
willing to help Jerry and Jim McGraw do the planning, please contact them.
10. Order of the Arrow - Tom Doligalski: The Netami Chapter meeting on 9/16
will focus on Brotherhood Conversion. The Fall Fellowship is coming up
at Camp Durant on September 17-19. The Netami Chapter meeting on 10/21
will feature Chapter elections.
11. Venturing - Chris Siegl: The Venturing Vortex is scheduled for September
24-26.
12. Health & Safety - Jim McGraw: Bob Gamble and Jim McGraw did the H&S
presentation at the August 12 RT. They trained 27 Scouters about H&S.
13. Training - Brian Garrett: The August 28th Mega Training session trained
258 adult Scouters. Chris Siegl, Suzie Slopek and Gary Thorn assisted in
the training sessions. If you want to help with our training sessions
please contact Brian or Robbie Spivey. We need MORE TRAINERS!
14. New Business - Robbie Spivey: Scout-O-Rama for 2005 - Robbie has talked
to the Town of Cary and they would be willing to help us in providing a
location for a Scout-O-Rama. Robbie needs help in getting a Committee
together to decide location and date and particulars for a Scout-O-Rama.
If any of our Scouters want to serve on the Committee they should contact
Robbie Spivey.
District Committee Members of the Month: Mark Christy, Jerry Jester and Suzie
Slopek for their work on the Cub Scout Roundup. Thank you to you 3 Scouters!
