BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
OCCONEECHEE COUNCIL
CROSSWINDS DISTRICT
Robert Spivey Susan Long Martin Banning
District Chairman District Commissioner District Executive
Attendees: Keith Biegert, Peter DeLyon, Bill Fairhurst, Bob Gamble,
William Highsmith, Jerry Jester, Roger Lear, Lu Little, Susan Long,
Bill Reynolds, Robbie Spivey, Chris Thomson, Gary Thorn & Ed Walsh
(14).
1. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Robbie Spivey. Martin Banning has had
his back operation and he is at home re-cuperating until mid-October. We
are praying that the operation was a success and that he will soon be back.
2. The August 2006 minutes were approved as written.
3. Commissioner Service - Susan Long: We would like to see more nominations
for the Scouter Recognition Event in October. We also need to have all
unit leaders to submit the names of the Scouts who have earned their
Religious Awards since October of last year. If you don't know who was
recognized last year, you can go to our website and look at the scanned
copy of the program from last year. Nominations for adult Scouters must
be submitted by the end of the Round Table on September 21.
LDS Pack and Troop 631 are getting organized in the Morrisville Ward.
The Commissioner's staff and our DD have visited many of our sponsoring
organizations to explain their responsibility in the Scouting program.
Don't forget to register for Commissioner College at Edenton UMC on 11/4.
You don't have to be a Commissioner to attend, but you must pre-register.
4. Vice-Chairman - Bob Gamble: OA had a meeting and decided to move their
Chapter meeting night to the 2nd Thursday of every month. Presently the
plans are to meet at Cary First Baptist Church's Annex #3 (where our
Committee meetings are held). The meetings will feature pizza and soda
before the meeting. The OA members must RSVP that they will attend the
meeting so that enough food will be on hand. This is being done to increase
the participation in the OA meetings. Note: There will be a class on
"de-mystifying the OA" at Commissioners College.
5. Camporee - Bob Gamble: The Camporee Key-3 held a meeting to plan the
activities for the Pioneering theme of the 2007 Camporee. There will be
a "cutting timber" party at Camp Reeves on October 7, 2006 with a rain date
of October 14. Contact Bob Gamble if you would like to help in that
prepartion for the District Camporee.
6. Training - William Highsmith: University of Scouting is coming up on
11/11 at Wake Tech. TDC is being held in Fayetville on October 14 and they
still need leaders for that course. E-mail Carol Liberty at
Scouter@nc.rr.com if you would like to be on the TDC course staff.
November 7th there will be a Cub Leader Training and Troop Committee course.
Refer to the Council Training Calendar to see the details of these courses.
William has had a patch designed for our District which will be given to
any course leader in our district.
William is looking for someone to be the district Cub Scout Training
Chairperson. Lu Little has moved from Cub Training to Boy Scout Training.
7. Civic Service and Activities - Chris Thomson: Our ham operators at the Cary
Lazy Days booth had about 25 contacts and there were more girls visiting the
booth than boys. Jamboree-on-the-Air (JOTA) will be held on Saturday,
October 25, 2006. This will be a district event with Raleigh and Cary hams
participating. There will also be activities for the BS Radio Merit Badge
and Cub activity badges. Chris is trying to find a place to hold the JOTA
and we will publish the details on the e-mail list server and web site when
they are finalized. If you would like to help, e-mail Chris.
8. Membership - Bill Reynolds: The Lazy Days Scout recruiting booth had a lot
of interest shown and we handed out many bags of Boy Scout popcorn. The
Cary Lazy Days Committee would like our district to do a service project at
next year's Cary Lazy Days, which would allow us to show-case Scouting.
Bill needed help putting out signs for the Sept. 12 & 14 Recruiting nights
and the Committee stepped forward and helped him out.
We have met the required number of units for being a Quality District. We
have about 1723 members and have not met the membership requirement.
9. 2006 Popcorn Sale - Gary Thorn for Beckie Dayton: 28 units showed up for
the district popcorn kick-off on September 9 to sign up to sell popcorn.
10. Advancement - Tom Allen and Gantt Edmiston (via-e-mail); There were 3
Eagle Ranks approved and 5 Eagle projects approved in September.
11. Venturing - Bill Fairhurst: Fayettville Venture units and the US Army are
trying to put together a jump school as part of Vortex 2007. Crews and
older Scouts will be able to participate in many upcoming High Adventure
programs next year.
Committee Members of the Month: Gary Thorn for his outstanding work as our
District Round Table Commissioner and his work with Pack 201.
