BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
OCCONEECHEE COUNCIL
CROSSWINDS DISTRICT
Robert Spivey Jerry Jester Martin Banning
District Chairman District Commissioner District Director
Attendees: Martin Banning, Beckie Dayton, Will Highsmith, Jerry Jester,
Roger Lear, Lu Little, Bill Reynolds and Chris Thomson (8)
1. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Roger Lear.
2. The minutes for September 2007 were approved as written.
3. Camps and Promotions - Martin Banning: Cub Scout Day Camp is being headed
up by Kari McMichaels for the Council. The District Cub Scout Day Event
is being headed up by Rudy Rowell and is planned for April 4-6, 2008.
4. Membership/Relationships - Bill Reynolds: We have recruited 185 new Cub
Scouts for our District. We are 102 Cubs short if we are going to be
a Quality District. At present we have 884 Cubs and need 102 more; we
have 934 Boy Scouts (had 920 last year, so we are ok there); we have 44
Venture Scouts (had 37 last year, so we are ok there). We have 56 units
this year and we have to grow 2% (we had 55 last year), so we need 1 more
unit. Bill and Martin think that we can reach those goals.
5. Finance - Martin Banning: Our District goal for FOS may be about $160K.
Our FOS Chairman will be Robbie Spivey and our Community Campaign Chairman
will be Jerry Jester. Martin is still looking for a Family Campaign
Chairman and a Major Gifts Chairman.
Popcorn - Beckie Dayton: Our 19 units doing Show-N-Sell ordered 1885
cases of popcorn with a sale value of about $141,000. We have 26 units
doing the take order popcorn sale. Recruiting labels were handed out to
all units to put on the popcorn packages and they were told by Beckie and
the Council to be careful to put the labels on the packages so that they
did not deface the packages.
6. Activities & Civic Service - Chris Thomson: Martin and Chris covered some
of the past events where our units provided flag ceremonies, etc.. The
JOTA event has 50 or 60 Scouts registered. Martin is trying to find
someone to head up our new Scouting for Food plan. The Pinewood Derby is
scheduled for March 1, 2008, with Bruce Wilcox as the Chairman. Ed Walsh
is heading up the Boy Scout Camporee in 2008 and Gary Thorn is heading up
the District Recognition Event. Martin wants us to concentrate on putting
in nominations for the Silver Beaver Award.
7. Training - Will Highsmith: October 6 is Mega Training at Falls District.
In October we have Commissioner's College, University of Scouting in
November along with Troop Committee Training. A District Committee
workshop is planned for January 2008. Flyers for most of the training
events are on the Council web site.
