BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
OCCONEECHEE COUNCIL
CROSSWINDS DISTRICT
Robert Spivey Susan Long Martin Banning
District Chairman District Commissioner District Executive
Attendees: Martin Banning, Kieth Biegert, Todd Ellis, Bob Gamble,
William Highsmith, Jerry Jester, Roger Lear, Lu Little,
Bill Reynolds, Robbie Spivey, Bryson Trexlor and Gary Thorn (12)
1. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Robbie Spivey.
2. The October 2006 minutes were approved as written.
3. Commissioner Service - Jerry Jester for Susan Long: Jerry asked all of the
District Committee members and the Commissioner's to turn in their BSA
registration by December 1, 2006.
4. Training - William Highsmith: William plans on presenting New Leader
Essentials during the November Round Table. There are 7 training sessions
that they are setting up for next year's training. Leaders should check the
Council's website Training calendar for more information.
5. Finance - Jerry Jester: Jerry is our Family Campaign Chairman again and he
has kicked off the 2007 campaign. They have raised about $8,000 toward the
$84,000 Family Campaign. We have a Community Campaign goal of $5,500, a
Major Gifts Campaign of $52,000 for a total of $141,500 for our District.
6. Membership - Bill Reynolds: Bill needs all the help he can get in painting
the cub figurines to be used in recruiting. Our Packs need more Cubs so the
recruiting of more Cubs is key. We also need 11 new Venture Scouts before
we can be a Quality District. Martin reported we are up 75 Cubs to 1,089;
up 92 Scouts to 914; down 9 Venture Scouts to 18; up 43 Explorers to 86 for
a total of 2021 Scouts. We have 73.5% of our units as Quality Units, which
is a very high figure and we think all the reports are not in yet.
7. Advancement - Tom Allen and Gantt Edmiston (via-e-mail); There were 5 Eagle
Ranks approved and 9 Eagle projects approved in October.
8. Civic Service & Activities - via Chris Thomson: Our District JOTA had 62
Scouts show up including a lot of Cub Scouts. Chris wants to do an all day
District JOTA next year on the third weekend in October.
9. 2006 Popcorn Sale - Jerry Jester for Beckie Dayton: It looks like we are
going to be unloading and sorting more than 2600 cases of popcorn on Nov. 16
and 17. If you can help, please contact Beckie Dayton. Beckie reported by
e-mail that we probably reached her goal of $300,000 worth of popcorn sold.
That would be the most popcorn our District has sold since we were formed.
Thanks to Beckie Dayton and all of our Unit Kernels and Cubs and Scouts!
10. Camporee - Bob Gamble: Wood cutting event was held and the wood needed for
the spring camporee is cut and stored at our camp.
11. Occoneechee Council Fall Cub-O-Ree was held on October 27-29, 2006 in
Garner. There was a car accident at the Cub-O-Ree in which a Cub Scout
from Pack 200 was injured and later died. Our condolences to his family.
NOTE: There will be no District Committee meeting on December 7. The
Committee will meet at Robbie Spivey's home at 6:30 pm for a Christmas
dinner. As in the past, each Committee member should bring a dessert to
pass. The Committee will provide the hot dogs and hamburgers and drink.
Committee Members of the Month: Chris Thomson, Keving Sloop, Jerry Jester and
Ed Walsh for putting on the District JOTA and William Highsmith and Lu Little
