BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
OCCONEECHEE COUNCIL
CROSSWINDS DISTRICT
Robert Spivey Jerry Jester Martin Banning
District Chairman District Commissioner District Director
Attendees: Martin Banning, Keith Biegert, Beckie Dayton, Todd Ellis,
Bob Gamble, Jerry Jester, Roger Lear, Lu Little, Anne McVeigh,
Bill Reynolds, Chris Thomson and Gary Thorn (12)
1. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Jerry Jester.
2. The minutes for October 2007 were approved as written.
3. Commissioner - Jerry Jester: Jerry says the Unit Commissioners have started
doing the unit inventories. They are also emphasizing the Centennial
Quality Awards that the units are trying to get. Jerry also reported that
Robbie Spivey's dad has had a serious operation and that we should keep
Robbie and his dad in our prayers.
4. Camps and Promotions - Martin Banning: Martin reported that at the Council
Camporee they had an Eagle breakfast. The Council is trying to get an
Eagle Scout database started for our Council.
5. Membership/Relationships - Bill Reynolds: The Council is short 1000 Scouts
to make Quality Council. Our District is about 78 Cubs short. Other areas
are OK, but we need to form 2 new units by the end of the year to make
Quality District. We have 938 Cubs, 948 Boy Scouts and 47 Venture Scouts.
We have a total of 52 units.
6. Finance - Martin Banning: Our District goal for FOS is $53K for Major
Gifts, $6K for Community Campaign and $92.5K for Family FOS. Jerry Jester
and Martin are getting ready to do Unit FOS training for 2008. Some units
already have FOS presentations lined up. Our Council was $100,000 short on
last year's FOS.
Popcorn - Beckie Dayton: After 3 weeks of tracking we are at $112K of
popcorn sold. Beckie thinks that is a little low and is worried that we may
not meet our goals for 2007. We still do not have a place to deliver the
take order popcorn. We need at least 2 loading docks and 10,000 sq. feet.
7. Activities & Civic Service - Chris Thomson: Pack 224 and Pack 231 have
signed up to do Scouting for Food. Kristen and Chris Meyer are the contacts
to talk to about setting a date for units to do SFF. Kristen is at
kjlm@nc.rr.com and Chris is at meyerchr@nc.rr.com. Cubs and Scouts are
signing up to participate in the various Holiday Parades in our area. We
had 72 Scouts sign up for JOTA and 55 showed up and 55 got their Merit
Badges. There are 18 Scouts and Scouters signed up to take the Ham operator
licensing class at the Council Office. Chris said that the Council Camporee
JOTA had about 155 Scouts visit the ham radio operator display. At the
Ritter Park re-dedication one of our Cub Scouts cut the ribbon at the park
re-opening.
8. Training - Lu Little: Hemlock is having an NLE & Cub Scout Training course
on November 10. On November 9, Crosswinds is doing a Troop Committee
Challenge at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. A Scouting with Disabilities
course will be offered on December 1 at Crossroads Fellowship on Millbrook
Ave. in Raleigh. A Council District Committee workshop will be held on Jan.
26. Crosswinds will give a NLE, Youth Protection and Cub Scout training
course on January 12 at Cary first Baptist Church. Flyers for most of these
courses are on the Council web site.
9. Eagle Board of Review - Gantt Edmiston (via e-mail): The October EBOR
approved 10 Eagle Ranks and 6 projects.
10. December Round Table - Jerry Jester: The December 20th Round Table theme
is going to be cooking. Ed Walsh says all the hungry Scouters should bring
eating utensils and an appetite.
11. Crosswinds District Annual Recognition Event - Gary Thorn: The Recognition
Event is on November 15, starting at 6:30pm with finger foods and desserts.
The recognition of Scouts and Scouters will start at about 7:15pm. It is
being held at the Cary Masonic Lodge at 1142 SE Maynard Road.
Gary and Jerry want to remind all Commissioners and Committee Members that
they are supposed to bring finger foods or desserts to the event before
6:30pm. Setup will start at about 5pm if you would like to help setup.
Gary's awards committee is meeting soon to go thru the awards.
12. Crosswinds District Web Site - Roger Lear: Due to circumstances beyond our
control, we are going to have to find a new location for our web site. We
are looking over several possibilities, but they all require a monthly or
yearly fee. How we cover that fee is being looked at and one of our
Committee Members has already stepped up to say he would pay for the first
year's web site fee. We have to be off our current site by year end.
Committee Member of the Month: Gary Thorn for his continuing work on Council
Training courses and for his work on getting the Crosswinds Awards Recognition
program set up for November 15.
