BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA
OCCONEECHEE COUNCIL
CROSSWINDS DISTRICT
Jonathan Taylor Jerry Jester Martin Banning
District Chairman District Commissioner District Director
Crosswinds District Committee Meeting Minutes
November 6, 2008
Attendees: Martin Banning, Beckie Dayton, Amy Edge, Todd Ellis, Jerry Jester,
Roger Lear, Monte McCaw, Bill Reynolds, Kevin Sloop, Suzie Slopek,
Jonathan Taylor, Chris Thomson and Ed Walsh (13)
1. The meeting was called to order by Martin Banning and the Pledge of
Allegiance was led by Roger Lear. Jonathan introduced Amy Edge who is our
new District Advancement Chairperson.
2. The minutes for October 2008 were approved as written.
3. Membership/Relationships - Bill Reynolds: Bill worked last month to have
Cub units sign up to do roundups. By year end we need, 917 Cub Scouts (98
more), 989 Boy Scouts (23 more), 43 Venture Scouts (6 more). That means to
reach 1,949 Scouts by year end, we need to recruit 127 more.
We also need to form 2 new units, as we are down 1 unit from last year, for
a total of 55 units. Bill is meeting with the LDS units to make sure that
they are all registered and to see if they can recruit some more Scouts.
Bill is looking into forming a Membership Committee to give him some help.
Our District is the largest District in the Occoneechee Council.
4. Training - Suzie Slopek for Will Highsmith: There are several courses that
are available for our leaders. On 11/22 we will hold CS Leader Specific,
New Leader Essentials and Youth Protection Training at Cary First Baptist.
Refer to the Council Training calendar on the www.ocscouts.org web site.
5. Activities & Civic Service - Chris Thomson: Chris reported that they did
43 Merit Badges at JOTA, with 10 or so more that may have been earned by
Scouts from other districts. Scouting For Food has no units signed up to
do any food collections for the rest of 2008 and only a few signed up for
2009. She has not yet heard from any units about helping in the Veteran's
Day Parade in Raleigh.
6. Finance - Martin Banning: Our 2009 FOS Kick-off is coming up and the goal
for our District may be the same as last year ($151,500). The Occoneechee
2008 Capital Campaign Family Drive for our District, whose goal was $20,000
is at about $7,000. Both have fallen short for this year.
7. Popcorn - Beckie Dayton: It looks like the Council sold about $2.2 million
worth of popcorn. Our District sold $180K worth of SNS popcorn and totally
about $340K worth of popcorn. That is more than last year, but Beckie says
the figures are not complete yet. We had 5 new units selling popcorn and
she is busy moving popcorn around to fill unit orders. She has already
moved about $40K worth. Our District had sales of about $8,000 on the
internet orders. Our Council was #3 nationwide for internet sales.
Beckie needs helpers on Novmember 13th to unload the trailer full of popcorn
we have coming in to Neomonde's Bakery in Raleigh (see www.neomonde.com for
directions to Raleigh store). If you can help, please call or e-mail Beckie.
8. Eagle Board of Review - Gantt Edmiston (via e-mail): The October
Crosswinds EBOR approved 11 Eagle Ranks and reviewed 5 Eagle Projects, with
3 being approved and 2 rejected.
9. Commissioner Service - Jerry Jester: Jerry said that the University of
Scouting was well attended by our District. He is still trying to sign up
more Commissioners for his staff.
10. Web Site Fee - Roger Lear: Our $100 per year web site fee has been sent to
Martin Banning for payment from our District budget.
11. 2009 District Planning Meeting - Martin Banning: The date for our Distict
Planning Retreat has been set for 8am on Saturday, January 24, 2009. The
location is yet to be determined.
The December 4th District Committee Meeting will again be in the form of a
District Christmas party for Committee members and their spouses. It will be
held at the Ocean Grill and Bar at 4300 NW Cary Parkway, Cary NC, 27513. It
will start at 6:30pm.
Committee Members of the Month: Beckie Dayton for her work as the District
Popcorn Kernel for the fourth year in a row and Todd Ellis, Chris Thomson and
Ed Walsh for their work on the JOTA program (and special thanks to the Radio
hams that took their time to teach the Scouts. Without them we would not have
a JOTA program).
