Crosswinds District Annual Recognition Event

On Thursday, December 3, 2009, the Crosswinds District Annual Recognition event will be held in the Fellowship Room at the Cary Presbyterian Church at 614 Griffis St., Cary 27511, just South West of downtown Cary. The reception will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the ceremony following at 7:15 p.m.

Because we are changing the date into December versus last year's October date, we are asking you to give us info on Scouts and Scouters receiving recognition since October of 2008. We may have already awarded the October 2008 recipients but we will sort them out, so that we don't miss anyone or make duplicate awards.

During this evening, we will recognize three categories of Scouting members and their involvement in the Scouting program. The first category of recognition will be for Scouts and Scouters who have received religious awards of their faiths since October of 2008. Please submit the names of all Scouting members in your unit who have earned these awards on the appropriate form (see forms listed below).

The second category of recognition will highlight Crosswinds Scouts who have earned their Eagle Rank or Venturers who have earned their Venturing Silver or Ranger Award since October of 2008. We have records for the Scouts who have arned their Eagle Rank, but you will have to use the form listed below to list the Venture Scouts who have earned their Venturing Silver or Ranger Award.

Exemplary Scouting leadership will be our third category for the evening. Presentations will be made to Crosswinds District Distinguished Leadership Citation recipients and the District Award of Merit recipients.

We need your help with the following:

1. Provide the names, addresses and phone numbers of all youth and adults who have received religious awards since October of 2008. Also include the name of the award and the recipient's faith (use the form listed below).

Note: Please invite these recipients personally to the Annual Recognition event as there will NOT BE invitations mailed to these individuals.

2. Each year our District bestows awards upon Scouters who give the BSA their best, who devote their time and energies to providing a quality program through which our youth can grow physically, mentally and spiritually. There are leaders in every unit who go unrecognized or who can't be thanked enough for their involvement; this is the perfect opportunity for your unit to tell them what they mean to your Scouts. We would like to see AT LEAST ONE NOMINATION from every unit. Below are some general guidelines for nominations for the DLC and the DAOM.

Nominations, Religious Award and Venturing Award recipient lists are due to the Recognition Event Chairman, Gary Thorn, no later than October 15, 2009.

If you are not sure an individual has been recognized, look at the list of recipients on our web site at History of Scouter Awards.

DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP CITATION (DLC):

a: Persons nominated for this award should have a minimum of two (2) years of service in Scouting; service can be provided in any level of Scouting or in a combination of levels. The nominee does not have to be a uniformed Scouter or a registered member of the BSA or your unit.

Note: Normally the nominee should NOT have received a DLC from our District previously. If they have, and it has been four or more years since they received it and they are still active with your unit, they may be nominated again.

b: Persons to consider: registered unit leaders, activity coordinators, Chartered Organization Representatives; persons/groups who have helped your unit, no matter what you have asked; members of your unit's Committee; persons you know that always provide their very best to the Scouting families.

c: Don't take it for granted that others have seen the same things that you have seen from this person; complete a nomination form to ensure the person is considered. Complete the form to the best of your ability, including as much information as you can provide. If you are unsure as to what awards have been awarded to your nominee, start with your unit copies of the "Adult Training Record".

If these have not been completed for each Scouter, your next Committee meeting is a good time to do so. If you need more information, ask fellow Scouters or the spouse - make a real effort to find the information.

DISTRICT AWARD OF MERIT:

a: Persons nominated for this award will have provided exemplary service to Scouting at the District level, outside the Scouting program, or a combination of levels.

b: The nominee must be a registered member of the Boy Scouts of America.

c: Persons who have received this award in our District should not be nominated again.

d: Complete the nomination form fully. Accuracy of training dates and attention to activities listed on the form are important. The more information you are able to furnish the more it will aid the Awards Committee in its decision.

Nominations MUST BE SUBMITTED to the District Recognition Event Chairman by October 15, 2009.

The can be submitted by e-mail, via US mail or delivered by hand to:
